You do not just press square/X. It is important to counter attacks with triangle/Y and you can stun enemies with circle/B. It is also important to evade by pressing cross/A. You can also quickfire certain gadgets. These are expanded upon in Arkham City. The real problems in the Arkham games are the cinematic story things like when you're suddenly walking while Batman talks to someone in his batphone.

Publishers just had too much decision power over the end product so devs were forced to design the campaigns to be piss easy so the CINEMATIC-obsessed gaming journalists at the time would rate it highly as per publisher demands. The actual gameplay was instead hidden in the challenge maps, in the predator challenges more so than the combat ones.
It's different since the late 2010s though, where CINEMATIC-obsessed gaming journalists were replaced by ones that suck even more because they expect tranny glazing of some sort. Also the powerless devs that still wanted to bring fun gameplay into a game in some way ended up being fired for being white males and not being "diverse" enough.

Which isn't a good thing, especially when Arkham Knight has way too many. I thought City had too many characters, but I could easily see somebody getting 300+ hours out of Knight just by doing the campaign+challenges

I think the music helped a lot. One thing that City did better than Arkham is the music. Arkham's music wasn't bad by any means and also reused some City tracks, but especially when it comes to the predator themes, City was simply better.
