The problem is we don't know WHY you're conscious. Maybe its something about the structure of the brain or its constituent parts that a computer won't replicate unless we design it to intentionally. Or maybe its just a fluke of that many neural bits working together.
We have the same question about dogs. Why is a dog not conscious but we are? Is a dog conscious after all but just not intelligent enough to express it? We don't have definitive answer for this. What about an ant? An Elephant? A deer? A fish?

Much of scifi is just trying to reinvent ancient fears. There's entire concepts like rokos ballsack which is literally just "what if we made god and hell but like, in a computer so athiests can get scared of it too?"

Anyway the whole thing relies on the author saying "it is so". You can have computer brain scanning that doesn't kill people if you want to write it that way. Not all fictional teleporters kill, too. It's whether the writer says it does or does not because it's all just thought experiments all the way down.

I remember reading I Robot and at one part in the book, they were testing out a teleporter while trying to not make the computer brain not accidentally kill itself from some logic failure on the laws of robots.
From what I remember the people in the ship that got teleported experienced temporary death where they saw hell for a short time I think it was.
They were completely alive and fine after the teleportation was fully completed.
I thought that was an interesting take on the teleporter conundrum.

Are you guys trolling? The story isn't about whether computers can or cannot replicate consciousness. It's explicitly shown that consciousness is cloned in the story and the whole thing is about the ramifications of doing so, not about how it was done or if it's even possible.
