some of these arent even that bad but i think whats most funny is that the new artist is clearly able to replicate the old style to an extent but it would have been the director/producer's choice for the most part

the old artist left and they adopted a modern style. it really sucks considering they went from something fantastical and unique to something painfully generic.

I go on about it like a broken record but it will never stop being tragic to me how graphics evolved to be able to display the art only for the art to devolve in time for it to do so.

falcom used to have based art. sadly with the artist gone, they had to adapt. at least tokyo xanadu was about high schoolers in tokyo so the anime aesthetic fit the theme. as you can see with the whale art for ys x, they do some cool stuff with the new artist too. but yeah its mostly anime art these days. traditional artists ask for arm and a leg these days in japan. even the musician broke off with them even though they treated him well. or did he die from old age? I didnt keep up with that. but ys ix and x use a new musician.

Yeah if you look at a lot of old fantasy art there's a certain casualness to it. It's not fully realistic by any stretch but there's a certain "realness" to it. Verisimilitude is the word that gets tossed around a lot.

the bottom picture does look worse, but also expensive just like the top. if I was a publisher and paid for an art piece just because I was assured it was gonna look great, I at least wanna put the artpiece up. imagine paying that much and not using the artpiece. its not like the old one is going away. its an artpiece not a video game visual update.

That's a decent way to put it. I don't dislike something more ostentatious or fanciful by itself but in that case it needs to carry more a sense of ephemeral wonder. The crap modern stuff somehow wants to be as fancy and over the top as possible but also your party is a group of level 1 puds.

I'm all for them porting PSP Brandish to PC but I want a hard mode. Compared to when I went through both 1 and 2 on SNES, PSP Brandish was really, really easy in comparison, at least the first couple floors. Does it get harder later on?
>Sorcerian
If they were smart they'd bundle as many scenarios as they possibly could together in one big rerelease/remaster/remake. I'd love that, maybe a new scenario or two as well. Hell I'm still waiting on Dinosaur, I wanna play through that in English. Brandish got me excited to see what they'd do with a proper first person dungeon crawler since Brandish basically is one design wise, just with a birds eye view instead of first person.

It's been a bit since I last played it but I do remember the later floors being trickier. There's also the Dela mode you unlock which is basically also the EX hard mode too. But if they were to do a new release I'd not complain if they polished some stuff up.

turn based high school drama mind broke them. it sells so fucking much. I swear after years of waifuism and shipping and memeing on here, I finally checked out one of the games on youtube and my jaw dropped when I saw it was turn based. I never knew falcom did turn based combat. they were the real time action guys. they do great action like ys. they did real time action even on snes.
>>712790808
they can just sell the roms with emulators, and put some reactive frames on the sides.
like use the cool looking brandish bikini armor girl that was only used in promotional posters, wait that was xanadu eh who cares, and have her yell good job and make noises when you score a high combo or something. alas like every other publisher, we are lucky if we even get bare minimum stuff with rom+emu ports

I'll have to return to it then sometime. Control wise it felt great, I'd say my only actual issue with PSP Brandish is that the field of view is oddly small and cramped but it's workable.
>Fucking, geo front. I get that fan translations can't be crapped out over night but fucking christ they announced that shit years ago without a peep since.
Yeah like, I don't wanna shit on a translation team if they're earnestly working on something and just taking awhile, but I feel like I'm gunna be waiting on these games forever and that sucks.
>>712790981
Oh I see what you mean, that makes sense. I've heard that N-Gage version is terrible but I'm still really curious about it. Didn't it come out first before PC too? Such a weird release.

I've never seen emulated ports with reactive borders but that's a cool idea in general. If they let me pluck the roms out of the game to use however I want that's even cooler. Just the idea that a release could let you play it however is something I feel is worth supporting.

fate stay night's sequel was also in translation hell for 12 years.
then some guy translated it in 1 month. he even hacked their servers to get access to the tool they used to patch the translations into the game, they had taken down the page so others couldnt use their tools. kek. anyway the original team's translation was out the door in 3 days after that went live. their meltdown was legendary.
a shit ton of snes era games are in similar situatins. localizatin quest and aeon genesis are the only two groups I know where they never pulled this crap. god bless their souls and may they rest in peace.

>Yeah like, I don't wanna shit on a translation team if they're earnestly working on something and just taking awhile, but I feel like I'm gunna be waiting on these games forever and that sucks.
this reminds me. amagami finally got translated after 15 years of hard work of people who didnt have the talent but did have the drive to do it. it was so broken on both the ps2 and psp versions. someone sat down and applied their translations to vita version and boom, working translation finally. it does sometimes take time, but you can always gouge this by teasing a fake translation attempt and see if the original team goes ape shit or not. cause if they are genuine, they will try to share their own progress with you or try to recruit you.
>>712791326
kek the reason for this girl who never appeared in the story being in all the promotional art was that they thought the game itself was lacking in coolness and that hot bikini armor would sell the game better than any other advertisement they could do for the game.

google translations are always uncanny. Im not talking about video games.
every time I try to turn an article into my own language, I can see all the word choices, grammar and whatnot just being wrong and out of place. so I get the hate for it.
now another tale, when I used to translate VNs back in the day for myself. broken useless translations not worth sharing. I used a dictionary app and inputted each letter into it. japanese letters each are a word and can have 40 different meanings. I had to cross refrence them with each other and with the context to get the translation for a paragraph out, and sometimes different paragraphs made it obvious that I translated one wrong and I had to go back and update it. I used to keep text files of these translations so I can replay the vn in comfort. I know a bunch of others did this and shared their translations on gamefaqs and similar places. thats why you sometimes see an old vn or japanese game's translation is some script on gamefaqs only.
ai tools are similar to the dictionary approach. the only difference is that instead of one word at a time, they spit out one sentence at a time with broken words. it makes the early part much easier, but the cross refrencing part much harder. its just another tool and I dont mind it if enough rewrites and corrections are done to get a proper translation out of it. sadly posers who just want to say "I translated it I translated it" will fart out an ai translated garbled text unfixed "cause too much work duh" and call it a day. this is due to them not having to sit through reading the translation themselves unlike the dictionary approach. the problem is the "translator" not the tool.
on another note, I absolutely abhor academics who translate using their degrees instead of tools like us. they take out a shit ton of weeb magic out of translations cause "muh english and muh grammar"

AI is a contentious topic at the moment but I can see the advantages in translations. Not as an independent solution mind you, you definitely want some editors to go in and fix shit because it doesn't really account for context and jargon.
