Why was Street Fighter 3 so beloved and Tekken 4 trashed? Parry is insanely fucking broken.

Virtually all of the cast was viable instead of 3 or 4 characters making tourney play more varied and interesting

tekken 4 didn't get multiple revisions to make it not suck like street fighter did, dont forget "third strike" isn't a subtitle because its the third street fighter, its the third version of street fighter 3

but also parrying is a: universal and b: the game has all the things that make earlier street fighter games good. tekken 4 deliberately did the exact opposite of what people liked about tekken 3/tag and isn't a system mechanics game so it has the same completely schizophrenic balancing as third strike but no great equalizer to stop jin from raping you

because sf3 is fun to play, something tekken 4 is far from being

SF3 was a disaster. SF2 was beloved and SF3 coincidentally sharing a name with it is the only reason it's known at all.

I don't know what the comparison with Tekken 4 is. Even decades later no one likes that game except for it's amazing aesthetics and soundtrack. SF3 was shit and widely disliked at first too. It took until 3S to make it good and by that point the sub series was already a flop though it had strong staying power. Parry isn't broken but it doesn't completely change how Street Fighter works. Kinda sad T4 never got an updated version to try to work things out, might've been good.

Tekken 4 was sloppa. You could barely even jump. Thankfully 5 saved the series.
Anonymous No.712786021 [Report]
>>712783031 (OP)
Tekken 3 was regarded as one of the best games ever at the time, so 4 really didn't have much of a chance to live up to that.
and then 5/5DR was another great release and just kind of leaves 4 forgotten in the middle

Parry being broken doesn't matter, fighting games can have the most ridiculous broken mechanics - as long as they're fun and exciting, no one will care

that had nothing to do with the games quality, it had to do with 90s CONSOOMERS only caring about muh 3D games and because it was released on cps3 boards which were expensive and new hardware owners would have to bother to buy and swap in to their machines
the fact it has persisted and gained popularity and probably the biggest active scene for such an old game is a testament to its quality
it is a truly rare type of game that was designed for a hardcore audience from a talented development team and the things it lets you do if you're good enough to pull it off are so iconic it created THE moment that anyone thinks of when they think of fighting games

Truth supernova
I main Makoto, Q and Alex and all of them have insanely different playstyles that can still work for a tournament setting without any boring mechanics plaguing the game. Modern fighters don't really have that, even Strive doesn't have it since a majority of the cast feels so lobotomized from their XX days

4 was shit but was the stepping stone to the best tekken game ever made in 5DR so its got that going for it.

SF3 famously failed hard on release and it wasn't until years later that it became beloved.

Do you like Tekken 4? I know people like the story and music and tone but gameplay I have never heard anyone defend that. I guess with Tekken 8 best you can say is it's not the worst game in the series anymore.

It really isn't. Of all the broken things in 3s, I don't know why parry is the one thing people seem to get so hung up on.

Because that's the thing that makes it so different from other Street Fighter games. Lots of them have bad balance or broken characters but they still feel like Street Fighter. Parry makes 3S feel like a different series because it changes so much about how the game functions. It's why a lot of people didn't like it

I really think the hate for T4 is way overblown.
T5 (vanilla+console versions) was just as broken if not more, but that was overlooked because of the amount of content T5 had (T1-3 Arcade Ver., over 30 characters, Devil Within, Ghost Battle, classic Namco arcade mini-games during loading screens, customization).
I always dreamed of a T4 remake (if that ever does happen, I believe it would be a first for a 3D fighting game), but seeing how much of a joke Tekken has become since T6 and especially T8, fuck that.
As for 3rd Strike, as far as I remember nobody really cared at that point about fighting games unless you were a regular at the local arcades, which was already a dying scene.

SF3 was trashed, anon. Remember, compared to other Capcom arcade games at the time, SF3 didn't do too hot. Don't help that the first iteration if Street Fighter III, New Generation is the worst of the bunch.

I didn't even know there was a SF3 until like 2002/3 when I saw it on a Gamepro (or EGM I forget, but I think it was Gamepro) magazine covering 3rd strike. Naturally Elena made me kinda hard back as a lad.
I went "Woah there's a SF3?" cause I never saw it anywhere.

Fucked up the movement really bad, nerfed combos and launchers way too hard, lots of uneven and weird stages lots of obstacles and hinderances, new wall shit was really exploitable. It had a lot of problems gameplay wise.
