What are some good games like the Crazies?
>enemies are infected by something or driven insane but retain enough sapience to use tools and utilize basic tactical thinking, rather than mindless zombies just trying to swarm the player to bite/swipe at them, but also more typically focused on killing the player vs self-preservation
>MC is on his own but is more resourceful, has better weaponry and guile

Resident Evil 4 is the most overt example with Leon being a gunslinging secret agent battling his way through a farming village and a castle and fending off the villagers using rudimentary implements and bows with guns, with the village even having a few Straw Dogs-esque showdowns as Ganado try to break into the house.

Uh Re6 has some zombies that fire assault rifles at you poorly if "smart zombies" is what you're after. So do the STALKER games. Although they're more dangerous.

RE5 and RE6's main issue is the open Gears of War influence basically turned them into military games with some horror elements, especially in the cutscenes which often have dudes with military gear ready to shoot it out or be generic cannon fodder. RE4 makes sure you understand you are on your fucking own, especially once Leon loses communication with Hunnigan.

Zombies are always better when they retain a small amount of intelligence and can use tools and circumvent traps.

If they're actual retard unga bungas then you can get away with stupid loony tunes shit like hanging a stereo on a fishing pole over a ledge and kill them all with almost no threat.

A game that lets you have that kind of emergent gameplay mechanics with a horde of zombies, focused around cleverly eliminating zombies rather than full on immersive survival sim like Project Zomboid, or letting you half-ass the task like the semi-recent Days Gone, would be pretty great. Dead Rising is close but it's too easy to just get complacent with the mini-chainsaw/steak knife boxing gloves or whatever the fuck the equivalent would be in later Dead Rising titles that I didn't play.

There's some 2D puzzle/cinematic platformers like Deadlight that approach that by necessity.
