The Ascent, it's a top down game but still looks impressive and full of details even in first person. I don't know what type of wizardy this is but I'd kill for a RPG in that setting with this visual fidelity.

It's the most subversive talmudic game I ever played. Such a shame because the tech behind and attention to detail is surreal reminds me of what MGS2 did at time

graphics have not significantly shifted in the past decade. RTX is a dev cheat code for not wanting to spend time actually optimizing their games while also having them still "look nice" and not take years to actually release and the advent of hyperrealism for the sake of itself has been singularly detrimental to the industry as a whole because with the means available, the level of creativity has stagnated due to not needing to find ways to make certain things work or using unique artstyles/presentation to help compensate for technical limitation. Okami has mogged every 'realistic' game released since 2006.

We are on the verge of possibilities in gaming that were mere pipe dreams half a decade ago. people dont know it yet but SOON we are going to have AAA games with individual armpit hair strands being fully modeled and ray traced with real time physics based movement. 8k armpit textures. REAL TIME SWEAT PHYSICS where your character sweats more the more she moves around. DLC packs of 20 different pubic hair styles with higher geometry counts than entire xbox 360 character models.

That's the exact same ideology that lead to The Ascent being so boring. It's gonna be Technomancer or Dex-level boring where you're just going back and forth talking to dudes for 90% of the game to do fetch quests and the action is going to be a drag again, but now in first person.
Make a fun action game first then add some yapping.

last game that really wowed me was probably something like metroid prime 1, luigis mansion, or super smash brothers melee. i grew up with a n64 so seeing the graphics of the gamecube was insane and i needed to get one asap. later i got an xbox which i enjoyed, but when the 360 gen came out, it wasnt as big of a leap and i remember waiting like 2 years to upgrade from the xbox to the 360. the games looked better but not really to the point that i had to have it "now". also i think a lot of games art styles ended up suffering because franchises on the xbox which already had a good art style ended up looking overdetailed and cluttered on the 360 having to make the next gen of games look "better".

the wii was a major dissapointment when it came out and i think i used it for like 5 games in the years i owned it. graphically it was the same as the gamecube but the quality of the library was substantially worse during the time i paid attention to it.

Stellar Blade with eve. Ac shadows with their amazing weather and foliage. Re4r for its environment and cutscenes. Idk, most new games push graphics and there have many easily visible improvements over the last 5 years. I definitely enjoy the graphics in new games, but sure graphics arenโ€™t everything. They really are something today compared to yesteryear, however.
