I'm playing a JRPG RIGHT NOW and dealing with this. If I want to try out a certain weapon, I only get half of the full experience because I haven't leveld up enough to unlock all of its attacks, and the rest are locked behind character quests that are several chapters away. On top of that, I can't just try out different battle customization options like I'm trying on shirts. I need to collect 10 boar asses and craft the augments for whatever I want to try, so if it doesn't work then too bad you wasted your time and resources.
I get that the whole point of JRPGs is the slow burn progression - it's intended that you feel weak, powerless, and completely lost at first, but you eventually learn, grow, consolidate, and master the game's world and mechanics by the end, to the point where you break the game in half and feel like a god. Sometimes the grind and costs can be TOO prohibitive though, like for the game I'm playing RIGHT NOW you're apparently starving for precious resources even in the 100% postgame.
How the hell do you thread the needle and get the balance right?
