correct, the cost of life was so much cheaper back then. At least where I lived.

Arcades?
>posting pictures of PlayStation 2 console, released Y2K
So, not arcades.
PS2 sold as many as it did because it was a cheaper DVD player, you know.

the ps2 had a lot of games after several years, true, but I can imagine those buying the console at launch to play games being quite pissed at their purchase. But then again it had a DVD player the best way to watch movies at home at the time. That is in contrast to present day when the best way to watch movies/TV series is to pirate them online, via VPN if need be.

Not when I was a kid, everybody has seen those ads of $80 SNES games and the prices on shit didn't drop nearly as quickly.
Gaming was really affordable between 2001 and probably ending 2016 because the systems would drop prices, we had greatest hits at $20, and games just generally drop price pretty quickly though I'm looking at everything from a physical standpoint digital titles vary wildly in price.
The one thing I did have that also ended a few years ago was game rentals which was a gift from the gods where you could get a best a game over a weekend and even better if it was a game that saved to a memory card you never had to worry if the game had to be returned because you still had your save
