Gaiden is short with forgettable side content but the combat is fun enough.
Ishin story is ok but most of the side content is basically just "bring me 5 carrots" type stuff.
8 has better combat than 7 but the story is maybe the worst in the series.
Pirate is longer than Gaiden with actual substories but the boat combat gets old quickly I didn't bother finishing the arena.

My answer for all of them is that they're ok if you want more of the same but don't pay full price.

Ishin's combat is middle of the pack for RGG games. I really only used 2/4 styles the whole game. The gun is OP and not much fun to use so I skipped it but the game isn't too difficult no matter what you go with.
