Only literal historylets ever actually believed that this was in any way a remotely plausible scenario.
Anyone who actually paid attention knew that Russia's military was absurdly corrupt and it's practices were pathetic and draconian. See: Dedovschina gay rape cases.
The Ukraine invasion has essentially gone about as poorly as I initially expected it would, actually the performance was far worse than I could have imagined. I read a joint chiefs military report back in 2015 that pretty thoroughly spelled out the weaknesses of the Russian armed forces and this little three day special military operation has proven the suppositions of that report correct almost to a T.
It's actually pretty hilarious how accurate they were about Russian capabilities.
