What killed the Weapon based fighting genre?
Do normies only play Street Fighter, Tekken and Smash Bros?

Back in the 90s oldfags had SoulCalibur , Samurai Showdown, Plasma Sword, Last Bronx, battle Arean Toshinden ... etc

All those franchises are dead. No SoulCalibur or Shodown in more than half a decade

If you want to use weapons , your best hope is to play one of the capcom or SNK collection of all their dead franchises.

Bandai Namco won't even give us a SoulCalibur collection like Capcom or SNK because they became a company of shitty licensed garbage and completely forgot about their original IPs after the merger. Not like it particularly matters in this case because normalfags don't actually want to play old games. Any game that isn't polished and optimized perfectly for players' enjoyment and convenience makes them feel unsafe, and they don't care that soul is lost in the process. Those Capcom collections always die in a month or something.

At least in SoulCalibur VI, moves with big range like some of Ivy's, Cassandra's or Mi-na's also whiff in big ways and it's almost always possible to run up and attack without the other player being able to zone you any further. Sometimes it's even possible to whiff punish them from decent distance.

3D fighters don't work well with rollback because character animations smoothly flow from one move inside the buffer to the other. Adding rollback makes those animations jittery for self-explainable reasons. Frame rate differences between the players are also felt more acutely because different stages and even different angles might be more demanding than the rest of the game. Someone can think they get locked 60 on their setup but they actually don't and it messes up inputs.

Fighting games fell out of popularity with people for a number of reasons while development costs only went up. These games never succeeded in grabbing the FGC's attention, so they died out.
Your best bet is hoping VF6 does well enough to convince Bamco that it's worth having fighting games not named Tekken.

If we stopped using "the FGC" as a buzzword and itself is a buzzword, we'd find out that there's more player base overlap between Smash and other 2D fighters than between 2D fighters and 3D fighters. 3D FGC is largely its own sub-community.

But we all know that it won't do well in the West and even if it does, it won't somehow lead to SoulCalibur's revival because the game still has more in common with Tekken as far as its base concept is concerned (even though basic controls and gameplay are more similar to SC). Tekken was literally made as a VF clone with the involvement of the original VF creator. SC plays similar on some level, but that's largely because all 3D fighters owe their core concepts to the first release of VF. SC doesn't even appeal to your average fighting game fan because they prefer a wacky modern setting like Tekken or SF.

There is no negative karma associated with a sword-assisted murder. There is no blood on your hands when you break into a Wal-Mart and threaten the cashiers with your sword. It is pure. It is sinless (though I don't believe in sin). It is a sword. Are you familiar with word epic? Guns are not epic. You point at someone and then they die. Swords, though. Swords. The satisfying clang of the metal, the audible squelch of your opponent's insides, the crimson bloodstain on the blade, swordfighting is epic, plain and simple.

That's because they could get away with selling a few hundred thousand copies and be profitable. Now they can't, there's only room for the biggest franchises, same thing happened to sports and racing games.
