nothing about this game requires open world it's a gimmick that adds nothing to the experience as you traverse a fucking wasteland

Correct.
And it's not paced nor balanced well in general.
The way the quests are spread around, with important NPCs and such being literally missable and impossible to find later on, also is just lazy.

I also find it odd that they did NOT bring back features like armor and weapons wearing down with use and damage from the DeS. Would've fit the game's nonstop looting of flowers and rocks feature like a glove.

I totally agree with you. While I really enjoyed the game for what it had to offer I think I still prefer linear experiences because starting a new character and treking all the way up towards altus plateau fucking blows.
the amount of vast space where nothing interesting happens beyond a few encounters, enemies and items is just not worth all that running around.

They needed the open world to crack 20 million sales.

Yeah but every normalfag was like DUUUUUUUUUDE HOLY SHIT OPEN WORLD since BotW.
The one thing about about it in ER is how you usually can run to whatever weapon you want to use the most straight from the start, instead of needing to wait until a certain point (like the ass end of the game if you wanted the dual katanas in DS3 for example).

Totally agree. I stopped playing after beating Margit. Tight, interconnected level design is what makes Souls games fun.

The open world exists just to make the scale of the game bigger. Honestly the most that’s ever done with it in way that actually wows you is how they don’t show the full map from the start, so taking the trap chests early on shows you the game is huge and then there’s a big underground area included with that. That’s really all that’s gained from it, the wow factor.
I don’t even know if the DLC did it better or worse. The verticality is cool but at the same time, so many areas just felt like bigger wastes of space in that. If you took Shadow of the Erdtree and condensed it by 50%, it would’ve been way better.
