the game is extremely expressive and looks and plays great, why the fuck would you ever waste more development time on useless shit and higher res assets when it's completely possible to have such a nice looking game on that level of hardware

I agree but
>higher res assets
I think modern stuff allows for things looking 10x better than PS2 games and that's a good thing.
What I disagree with is the trend chasing AI generated frames, RTX on, and hiring talentless hacks to put together a fake game in Unreal or whatever engine of their choice is.

Hero mode changed some of the missions to make them more difficult by having more enemies and you taking more damage. There's one mission where you are sitting in a car thing with a turret that is extremely hard in Hero mode.

i would rather games go back to looking like they did on ps2/GameCube than wait 5+ years at minimum for fucking anything to ever release
games take too fucking long to make because of bloated uncompressed asset creation which necessitates bloated budgets and outsourcing and less games being made because there's too much financial risk and what games ARE being made are all made by committee slop because all they care about is getting a return on their one huge decade long investment instead of just releasing a bunch of smaller scale actually good games
graphicsniggering has ruined the entire industry

Clank isn't exactly a fair comparison, he's one of the best sidekicks in gaming, to the point that sidekick isn't the best descriptor and he's just a protagonist like Ratchet is.
Daxter is contentious because we know from his own game that he did fucking nothing to help break Jak out of prison for two years, once he does, the most Daxter does is shoot while Jak drives and grab hard to reach objects for Jak, everything else is situational like Jak getting too pissy to race and in cutscenes it's clear that Jak only keeps Daxter around because he's his friend, in fact Jak 2 actually shows multiple times that Jak doesn't need Daxter to help him with a lot of things and his sneeze even gets them found out by Praxis.
I suppose Daxter never lost faith in Jak, unlike Kiera, but Samos didn't either, so he's not unique in that respect, Daxter just kind of sucks whenever he isn't funny because that's all he really has going for him as a character.

If there is a new J&D, especially a remake, it wouldn't be ND working on it.
They tried making Jak 4 and nobody liked the direction is was going in, so the project's resources were shifted to a new IP (which became The Last of Us).

Let's ask A.I.:

1. Open-World Structure (Post-PS2 Era Onward)

By the PS3 era, Jak and Daxter would have likely become fully open-world in the vein of GTA, Horizon, or Spider-Man, taking the open-ended hubs of Jak II and Jak 3 and expanding them. Think: seamless cities, wastelands, jungle ruins, and aerial traversal via hover vehicles.

2. Deeper Combat Systems

Combat would evolve into a hybrid of third-person shooter and melee action, influenced by games like Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and God of War. Expect:

-Modular weapon customization (Eco-infused tech)

-Skill trees for both Jak and Daxter

-Faction systems and side quests with branching outcomes

3. Eco Powers as RPG Systems

Jak's Eco powers (Light, Dark, Green, etc.) would become a dynamic progression system akin to infamous or Mass Effect. Players might align with different Eco factions or specialize their powers via upgrades and choices.

4. Co-op or Companion Mechanics

A playable Daxter โ€” either in co-op or tag-team gameplay โ€” would finally be a core feature. Think dynamic synergy mechanics like in It Takes Two, or AI-controlled Daxter with unique tools and puzzle-solving capabilities.

Visual & World Design:

1. AAA Visual Fidelity
With Naughty Dog's modern engine work on The Last of Us Part II and Uncharted 4, expect:

-Real-time lighting and weather cycles

-Lush, dense, reactive environments

-Cinematic animations and lifelike character models โ€” while maintaining a slightly stylized, Pixar-like edge

2. Darker but Balanced Tone

-Following the tonal maturity from Jak II onward, modern entries would balance darker themes (political corruption, Eco wars, ethical technology) with the franchise's signature humor and platforming whimsy. Narrative Themes in 2025
Eco Crisis and Environmental Collapse: Given today's climate concerns, the lore of Eco would be recontextualized as a commentary on sustainability and exploitation of natural resources.

-Identity and Evolution: Jak's struggle with his Eco powers and Daxterโ€™s existential journey (still comic but more heartfelt) would be core emotional threads.

-Multiverse/Eco Rift Theory: Building on Jak X and The Lost Frontier, the series might explore multiple timelines or rift-based realities โ€” similar to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

Live Service & Online Elements?
Naughty Dog might have flirted with:

-A Jak X-style online racer with seasonal updates

-Community Eco challenges

-Customizable characters or vehicles

-Optional multiplayer co-op for major missions

But given their resistance to full-on live service (as seen with the scrapped The Last of Us multiplayer project), this would likely be an optional or spin-off experience.

Spin-offs & Side Projects

-VR Eco Experience: A Moss-style immersive Eco exploration game

-Daxter 2 (Indie-scale Adventure): Following up the PSP game with more charm and polish

-Animated Series or Film (Sony Pictures): Given the Uncharted movie and TLoU TV success, a Jak and Daxter animated project would be likely on Netflix or Sonyโ€™s own streaming platforms.

Druckmann only wrote the initial concept for Lost Frontier that was being worked on at ND. Once it got passed off to High Impact, ND had nothing to do with it whatsoever and Druckmann was shadowing under Hennig for the Uncharted titles.
So, you can probably blame Druckmann for the whole "run out of world" idea which to be fair, is set up in the original titles. The whole idea is that Jak's world is unfinished, the precusors just stopped making it and left all their shit there.
As for specific character writing? That falls to High Impact.

Oof. Opengoal is the best way to play Jak1/2 and soon Jak 3. It's buttery smooth, has button rebinding, supports mouse and keyboard, mods and has 144fps support.

In the second game she very much does. In the third game however Keira is unvoiced for most of the ride (I think because of IRL voice actress issues), so I guess the devs decided to minimize Keira's role in the story and turn Ashelin into Jak's new girlfriend.

I don't know, the tonal dissonance between the Jak games is stark enough I think it's reasonable to claim that there is no trilogy, just three games in the Jak universe. That'd mean R&C wins by default. R&C still wins anyway, but the point stands.

this, most of the encounters in jak2 are easier to go through with just melee. could you imagine this retard anon from a few weeks ago who was so bad at the game he got filtered by the melee controls
>On foot it's practically a bullet hell with almost no ability to aim, there's an entire melee system that is completely useless because trying to use it will cause you to take way more damage with zero forgiveness for anything less than absolute perfection.

Now I just run and jump past them or use the hoverboard and don't have any issues.

The one where the tank chases while targeting you got me too, feel like both of these should have at least been later in the game so you have more time to get your bearings.

Played through Jak 1 recently using the fan made PC port (which is amazing btw). The game has a cool setting and nice 90's comic book vibes, but the gameplay fucking sucked. The double jump only triggering during specific frames of your jump arc is so retarded, it's like you're playing a shitty rhythm game every single time you jump. And you need to collect 50 thingies to restore 1 (ONE) hit point? WTF, you're never gonna do it, why even include this mechanic lmao

And now I'm scared about trying 2, cause everyone says it's worse and has open world slop/GTA elements, as well as giga unbalanced difficulty spikes. But maybe it's worth it if there's no more garbage platforming?

Jak 1 is basically open-world Crash Bandicoot
While 2 and 3 are somewhere between GTA and R&C.
Very little in common beyond the items and world-building.
