I'm playing Defender 2002 on Xemu (if you want to play this, xbox is the best version). This is my favorite kusoge from childhood. The ships and sci fi and aesthetic are so cool. The main thing is you have to accept it's more of a puzzle game than flight combat, but once you see it that way it's quite fun to figure out consistent strategies and make it through the end of the game.
I'm playing the Elite difficulty with the worst ship, Guardian. The main problem is its general slowness to do anything when most of what you have to do is on a timer. I've already beaten it with better ships many times. Mare Frigoris level is hurting me now because I have to defend a small area against so many air units but my only AOE attack also damages the thing I'm supposed to defend and I'm ammo limited on missiles which are the other halfway decent weapon. But there are only a few missions left once I figure this out. This is the kind of game you can beat in a couple hours once you know what to do.
Once this challenge run is over and I can beat Elite with Guardian and no deaths, I will have completely mastered this game 22 years after I first played it.

The people making the emulator care. There is xemu, cxbx and xenia, and also recently the sonic unleashed decomp (most of the work on that was game-specific but it's still exciting). To me it feels like there has been plenty of progress in the past 5 years or so between emulator improvements and CPUs available now 2x-3x faster than Skylake single threaded.

idk i just feel like those emulators dont get as much progress or updates as the others. RPCS3 and even some switch emulators seem to always get upgrades, PS4 emulation recently took off too. i dont know how ot say it but xbox/360 emulation just "feels" behind

Also worth noting that ANEURISM IV is NOT on consoles, PC exclusive for the time being and I'd wager the foreseeable future. So every now and then you can get games that are too niche for other platforms, kind of like Space Station 13 will never thrive on a console either. It's something that came out of Garry's Mod community. And it's multiplayer games like this that remind me of why i always preferred PC to begin with.

>pvp
also okay
I mean I'm impressed with how most of the stuff in both pve and pvp class-wise make sense. obviously people will prefer or lean towards classes that are strong practically all the time (like Tactical) but I don't feel particularly bad about the balance.
