I like that he made it clear that he values a diverse portfolio. The issue being it's just of a single niche kind of videogame that demands a lot of time and attention from the players and thus a single player can't play more than one or two of them at a time

>This time for sure
Its insane that Sony has this much money to literally throw into a furnace and burn. Why do they choose to inflict themselves with this when instead they they could have made the ps5 $300, which would put one in every single American household cementing their dominance, forcing devs to actually make games for their platform.
They would lose the same amount of money and they would instantly win forever.

4 billion to have no control over the studio and also to prevent Bungie from shitcanning employees. Schizoramblings suggest that Bungie overhired and started a shitload of projects only to make themselves look good for an acquisition. Once they got it they cancelled the projects and fired 25-33% of their staff AFTER they got money that was supposedly entirely meant to retain staff

I really have to wonder how these execs keep doing this. They spend billions on a studio for creative talent to make games only to find them not even trying for years and years on end. You'd think these business types would notice billions going in and nothing coming out at the other side.

Because they're all MBA's who only understand business as a form of rent seeking and are ideologically opposed to the very idea of production. The modern MBA major can only conceive of doing business as buying out someone else who did all the actual development and then collecting the eternal subscription fees. It's why they keep trying to make GaaS work no matter how many times it fails, to them collecting subscription fees eternally is the highest moral virtue.

I hate these articles, you can actually go an watch the interview on the Sony website if you want. Obviously they're not going to give up on live service, especially since some of Sony's big money makers in games are live service games, like FGO. However they're not going to mass produce them like before and actually try to have some quality control. In the same interview they said because of games like Astro Bot's success they'd be looking into making more games like those as well.

It was from an interview, standard corpo speak about a game one of their studios is making but journalists are making a huge deal about it because they want to justify Concord. The interview was about 40 minutes, and talk of Marathon was like 1-2 minutes, but journo's are ignoring literally everything else, including details about the PS5 and more Astro Bot, including them wanting to make more Astro Bot games and making it a lasting franchise for the PS5.

Not saying in anyway that Intergalactic or Saros are tentpole series by the way, just that they are single player games that are most likely coming out in 2026. This doesn't even include games that Sony publishes but doesn't directly make with first party studios or if Team Asobi is making anything they've just not announced.

They're trapped, sony single player games cost 200 million dollars, take 6 years to make and are at best 6 or 7/10 games and they've trained their install base to ONLY buy these bloated overproduced over focus tested movie slop games where your character is constantly yelling about how to solve the shape puzzle every two seconds and are voiced by the same 10 people from the SAG union(who now get a percentage of the profit thus driving the costs up more)

They have to convert to Live service slop or go out of business.

Ironically part of their problem is they cut and fired all of their japanese studios and developers and moved to california because they thought that was the "future" of gaming.

What others said but also they are excellent embezzlement, nepotism, and grift opportunities.
Imagine- you are some scummy corpo type who wants to take a few hundred thousand off the top
Which do you take from?
A project with a tight budget with clearly defined goals and strict oversight to ensure that the product is shipped on time and on budget since it's expected to make back every penny spent on it plus big profits?
Or a project run by people who are so utterly incompetent they can't even get a tech demo for internal review up in SIX YEARS, and that you already know the entire budget is going to have to be written off as a loss because of it so nobody will be wondering "hey where'd this money go anyway" even if they do notice it missing? (Blaniqua the transnigger genderqueen nupalestinian with a degree in gender studies who you deliberately hired as the project's record keeper certainly won't know)

Why are video game developers so stupid? If they want to go all in on a live service game all they need to do is make a hero shooter with a roster of attractive women. It's that simple. Blizzard will try to virtue signal by including ugly pieces of shit like Venture's they/them ass. But when it comes to making collab skins, it's always Mercy, Kiriko and now Juno getting the most skins. They know deep down it's the attractive women that sell. Sony and other developers refusing to acknowledge this is basically self sabotage. If Shift Up ever made a hero shooter with the Nikke girls, it would probably be the most profitable live service game of the fucking century.

It really is insane when companies donโ€™t put profits at the forefront anymore. If you have a main project thatโ€™s super successful, I can see taking on a vanity project and pushing all that dei shit. But to put the dei shit as your main project and losing money when itโ€™s a bust. It just seems like insanity.

Some will say that they make money in other ways (ESG funding), but you're 100% right.
The audience for video games is still mostly straight males, though, this younger generation seems to think men being attracted to women is icky or some shit.

Unironically a video game crash might be the best thing that could happen right now. Every single problem video games have began when it became more and more successful and people who never cared about video games before and who have no passion or love for video games decided to dip their toes in the industry to take advantage of that newfound success. Iโ€™m talking about CEOs and shareholders that decided loot boxes and on disc dlcs were good ideas because they maximized profits. The video game industry needs to crash so bad so that all these people will collectively fuck off.

The fact of the matter is that the suits running these companies can only think in terms of "new game must be bigger in scale!" and that's it.
Smaller projects feel like failures to these people.

We already know it was development hell because the game was supposedly being worked on for 6 years

>"Oh, but maybe that was mostly preproduction and they just didn't get enough time with a proper staff to make the game"

Then why are the two biggest innovations they won't shut up about are a level that won't be in the game at launch and a ranking system that literally doesn't exist yet?

What's even better is when they KNOW shit is bad, and that the pressure's on to deliver, like Bungie is with Marathon, or Bioware with DA veilguard, or Ubi's break in case of emergency AC japan, and they STILL barve it up.

Disney is still trying to make "theme park ride" movies after all the ones that aren't pirate trash have failed. Bobby Kotick made like $400 million from the Activision acquisition even though he left it as a wasteland of rape accusations and COD trash. Elon routinely gets pay packages from Tesla that are several times more than what Tesla's profits actually are. I'm pretty sure companies can't even go bankrupt anymore once they reach a certain threshold, no matter how much they fuck up. Also

Why contain it? S'cool. Let the mobile games pile up in the streets, something something devs who actually give a shit will still make good games for PC you get the reference surely.
Just because AAA slop factories are no longer producing slop for your platform doesn't mean people who actually give a shit about making good games will just cease to exist.
