If I have choice paralysis when it comes to picking out a game, I realise that I simply don't want to play any games at the moment, so I go do something else. Don't treat it like a chore.

There is no such thing when it comes to games simply because there are barely any worth playing.

I have the opposite problem. There aren't enough games to choose from and there's weeks where I don't have anything I want to play at all. Then I find something, finish it and feel completely empty again.

Idk I usually have an idea what I'm in the mood for and there's hundreds of games in my backlog so I just pick one of those.
The real issue is finding games with a play length that matches my mood

I don't know how you would make your game stand out in a literal sea of shit like that. One that never seems to run out even before the advent of AI assisted slapdash productions. There aren't enough years in the average human lifespan to sift through all of it beyond a quick glance at the product descriptions themselves.

That's your problem, you follow what your depressed brain is thinking like an animal. You have to push yourself to take that next step and then you'll finally start having fun with the game.
>t. cleared out half of my steam backlog like this in under a year after realizing i should just play video games than browse /v/ for 7 hours a day

>b-but the game's still not fun
It's okay to drop games because they're not your type or you realize it's dogshit. Don't force yourself to suffer, just force yourself out of your comfort zone every once in a while.

By wanting to play games. Option paralysis is an excuse for someone who doesn't actually want to play said games at all.

My impulses just take me where I need to go, and I don't feel weighed down by opportunity cost because I will be playing video games until the day I die.

But god, do I hate choice paralysis in other niggas. You offer them as few as, say, 20 games, and they'll already be acting like they can't possibly make a choice or that it's too much to think about or what have you. I sit on a massive pile of multiplayer vidya I'll never get to because I wanna weigh all possible options at any given time but the rest of the world can only get on board if you commit to a specific one to push right then and there.

Also a thing to note is that if you're going to start a long game, it's not going to hold you hostage until you finish it, it's not going to grow legs and run away if you don't touch it for long periods of time and it's okay if you don't beat it under a week.
Playing Dragon Warrior 7 for the first time, it took me about half a year until it was finished. Most of the time I only chipped away at it for maybe 30 minutes-an hour a day, occasionally I went hard with a 3 hour play, a few times I didn't touch it at all for a couple days just to let it simmer. Regardless, I was able to play other video games on the side and it made reaching the credits feel that much better, like finishing a big project.

Sorry for blogposting, but I feel like people are generally losing interest in games because they're treating it like a checklist rather than an actual hobby. It's okay if it takes you 2 years to beat Mario 64. It's okay if Castlevania constantly kicks your ass and you can't beat it on the first, second, fifth, or tenth try. It's okay if Persona 5 is a 100 hour game that you can't finish in a weekend on a whim.
It's OKAY that YOU'RE NEVER GOING TO PLAY EVERYTHING IN YOUR LIFETIME.
It's OKAY that NOT EVERY VIDEO GAME IS CATERED TO YOUR TASTES OR NEEDS.
Throwing a fit that most games don't bend to your will and hand you every trophy for just trying is how you grow miserable and bitter.

I never experienced this in a game until I started playing Nioh 2 recently. I was not expecting how many fucking skill trees there are and how each skill has like nearly a paragraph of explanation. Ton of skills and modifiers in an action game is fucking nuts. Dark Souls doesn't even go into this much depth. When I have to read this much I expect an RPG or even a TRPG or RTS game, but not an action game. Somehow my brain locked up and said "screw this". I ended up picking random shit on the skill tree, sticking to one weapon, and messed around playing through the game with a friend. We got to the end, beat it, and I have no desire to pick it up again despite having so many weapon types to try. I hope Nioh 3 cuts down on the bloat but this was so fucking unnecessary.

Make a numbered list of games, force yourself to play and finish each stsrting from number 1. Only ever play one game at a time. How to make yourself do this? Pure willpower. There are no tricks. If you don't have the will, you will be forever be a procrastinator.

I used to never finish games but a switch flipped last year now I only finish games. I started cataloging my completed games and they just have been piling up. I think I'm addicted to adding a new game to my completed list. I worked all year last year but have been neeting this year and I already have more finished on 2025 than 2024
Ive finished 60 games since the start of 2024, and I play long ass games for the most part. the only games I've dropped in that timeframe are visions of mana and AC6. visions was because i didn't like it, AC6 was for some new release I can't remember which but I got distracted and if I don't play a game for a while I struggle to get back into it

By playing the same game over and over again. They don't like this because it means you have no desire to buy new games. That's why the internet tries to condition you into thinking it's a bad thing to play the same game for a long time.

If you need to "force yourself" to play games then why not force yourself to do something useful like cleaning, cooking or learning a skill instead? IMO, if playing games doesn't feel like something pleasant that doesn't take any effort, you just shouldn't do it and start listening to music or watching something in your leisure time instead. Adulthood is realizing that just because something is difficult it doesn't mean it's worth doing or succeeding at if there's no real-life reward.
