I was replaying the classic Resident Evil games and noticed that bullet casings will bounce off walls and stuff. Never noticed that before but itโ€™s pretty cool for such old games.

Honestly, I think the last time I was actually "wowed" was when I played Call of Duty 2's demo.
>seeing all the enemy NPCs swarming you
>seeing the muzzle flare from the turret light up the surrounding sandbags
I just remember that feeling truly next gen.

The sad thing is that tech tricks aren't even computationally expensive. We could build a game for a 2000's system full of tech tricks that impresses people, but it's more of a time consuming thing than a computational problem. We could have so many technically impressive games if they just could implement them all.

I feel like ray tracing has stole the thunder of old school tricks. Too many developers are just sitting and waiting for base engines to get more capable of instead of going out of their way to be innovative with what they got. They will release some new RT Super Max AAA game but a lil Crysis from 2007 still does things it doesn't.

Lots of unskippable cutscenes mixed with much less interesting writing than 1&2. I replayed the trilogy awhile ago and despite it being my favorite as a teenager it's the only one I not only didn't blaze through in a day but didn't even finish. I'm not sure I'd even say the gameplay is really better considering the limited weapon variety, on-rails sections, and stiffer movement although it's still definitely fun.

There would also be a piece of paper with a fishbowl a glass and a goldfish.

if a modern game included things like that it'd be at the cost of something else, usually optmisation or undercooked gameplay.
Starfield has some legitimately beautiful interiors, skies, plants and vistas and some great armor but none of it really matters when the gameplay is ass

Yeah ever since raytracing became a regular feature, people stopped caring about stuff like that I feel. I guess with the way raytracing has become so marketed in the industry these past few years, all the other tricks in vidya tech development are overshadowed in discussions.

It's a very common method of reflection to have a second character walking around behind the "mirror" in a second room that's mirrored on the other side, the second character is holding a flashlight and that light is shining through the hole in the wall where the mirror is.
It's not fucking rocket science.

This is the kind of autistic detail people actually want. Your game can look as photorealistic as possible with the newest Raytracing technology but having some realistic reactive water is so much cooler. People just love to shoot at random stuff and see a reaction

Because improving AI is a bad thing. It's trivial to write AI that's smart and will flank the player. Every player hates it, because you get absolutely raped in unwinnable engagements with one guy baiting you around a corner and 3 more shooting you from another hallway.

So instead AI is all about stuff like missing the player on purpose if your back is turned, or shouting about when they're moving or hunkering down so you know how to kill them.
