It is pretty insane how these days a developer might work like 1/4th or even 1/3rd of his entire professional career making just one AAA video game.

why can't it all crash and burn already so they can go back to small studios, budgets and dev time

Thats the issue, the AAA scene is so diversified even if one or two companies go under the industry as a whole will still survive. There's no real situation where one big flop takes everyone out all at once.

Honestly I still blame Sony for that and how they obviously majorly changed the game and entire story to facilitate Keanu. Sony wanting the game to run on a base ps4 definitely fucked them extremely hard. There was no fucking way the game was EVER going to run on a base ps4 and it showed on release. The vast amount of the bugs you saw around release were from the ps4 version.

Nobody higher up is actually intelligent. They all fail upward or were put there by a friend/relative. I used to think "it's only accountants in the board rooms these days!!" And maybe that was true in the 90s/2000s but not anymore. These companies are making decisions that are losing tens of MILLIONS of dollars every project through mistakes that could have been corrected simply. But they keep doing it. Look at Disney. Bomb after bomb, critical failures, nobody actually thinks the live action remakes are better. But they keep doing it. Stock prices keep plummeting. Why? I don't know.

As long as there is just one game like Fortnite or GTA Online, there will be venture capitalists who dream of getting their hands on multibillions like that.
"Safe" investors are generally not interested in video games in the first place anyways. They already are inherently so volatile high risk high reward investment, that people seeking steady growth and stable profits have much better options for their investments.

Reminder that the pretty much only criteria for Microsoft's studio closures whenever they do layoff waves is to check out how close the studio is into shipping the next game. That is why Tango Gameworks got the axe but Ninja Theory did not despite Senua II costing a fuckton but making a fuckall, Tango Gameworks did not have a next project pitched yet but Ninja Theory had Project: Mara far enough in production.

As a share holder, this isn't working anymore. Almost all of the streaming apps were huge money sinks. They keep spending hundreds of millions on budgets for shows that nobody is watching. It only took them until now to start adding ads for revenue. We already saw what happened when covid had to shut down Disney, they kept buying studios and they ended up 65 billion in debt.

Allmost all of the huge studios made big but stupid purchases. Like Sega buying Rovio and Sony buying Bungie in billions for studios that basically were at their peak 2 console generations ago.

Anon, this ain't working anymore. Yes, people still go to the parks, but those places are getting too expensive. Look at their failed Star Wars crusie, and Star Wars was supposed to be this huge money maker. But we also live in a time where parents don't have time to take their kids to the movies. Before, believe me, I would have dads tell me they take their kids to the theatre to shut them up, rewatching the same shitty kids movie 10 or more times. But I feel like now the wait and just pay the $30 or whatever for the day 1 digital releases. And the kid can watch it over and over because now the kids are always on tablets or phones watching YouTube/social media content.

>>712887281
Jews invented Hollywood, back when movies were even better and uncensored. I think a lot of people forget that.

>>712887524
They were stupid for targeting high end PCs. Devs today don't want to make a good game anymore. They want to make some visual spectacle. That's why the audio has to be Hollywood studio quality and uncompressed. Visuals have to be ultra detailed and ultra realism. We need big name celebrity actors or face scans. No local multiplayer anymore. Like they're pushing everyone onto huge 300GB games that need a graphics card that runs WORSE when you turn on its latest feature. Storage space is expensive, bandwidth is slow in some places, and graphics look like they're getting worse because it's like nobody knows how to do programming tricks anymore.

That's what happens when you get rich enough that you start buying studios like a stock and start seeing them as nothing more than numbers
>buy as much of studio as possible to diversify risks
>close studio down that starts showing a sign of reds
>in red because they were developing a game and they were about to see huge returns once they release it? Don't care having a period of red is a bad look to investors
>make live service games and remasters from 2 years ago that can be made in a month to show constant green, it activates me and my investor's neurons
>dump money on a DEI nigger game so I can brag about how I'm losing money for the society in the investor parties, they love that shit
and no it's not the most efficient way to make profit, 99% of those people aren't where they are because they are a good businessman, it's mostly luck, being a borderline con man, and nepotism.
It does make just enough to continue their meaningless status quo though.
