>>712893040 (OP)The real answer no one wants to hear is VII was the beginning of the end. The goal to keep moving towards realistic graphics started with VII with their push for FMVs and "Hollywood Production" as seen in their push during advertising.
That led to Spirits Within, which forced the Enix Merger, and thus the big crash out development of XII, leading to longer and longer dev times to keep pushing for realistic graphics when they should have stayed stylized since the start.
That said, they should have given some of their side games a number. Games like Type-0, World of, & Stranger of Paradise should have been given numbers, to give them gravitas and marketing needed for their long dev cycle.
