Fuck, this game is amazing. It's kinda like a roguelite. I like that it's linear and not open world. The dragon was scary. It would probably have terrified me as a child. I like how gameplay-centric it is. You can't exploit bosses with terrain abuse, because they all have dedicated arenas. It's the complete opposite approach of other games during it's time.

Oh really? I consider DkS1 to basically be a masterpiece but I've never tried DeS before. What's so roguelite about it? I've never heard the game be described like that before.

>What's so roguelite about it?
They eliminated save-scumming through in-game mechanics. Instead of a game over, you revive at a bon fire. You lose all of your souls of your run, unless you are able to reach the area, where your previous run ended. You can also return to a Nexus and completely change your equipment to do another type of run.
I really like that it's like that. In any other type of game, you'd just reload instead. But it's not like you waste your time doing these runs. You can find moon grass and other items, which dont get lost. So if you get good enough, you will finish a run with more healing items than health you lost.

I even called it roguelite instead of roguelike, so people like you dont get triggered. I will stop that now and always use roguelike.

I don't know if I think that respawning at a checkpoint is particularly roguelikey. I mean Crash Bandicoot does that.

But hey as long as you're having fun, it's a fun game. Boletaria's loud-ass dragon would've been spooky but Valley of Defilement's sickening atmosphere would've been spookier.

DaS was just a lazy ripoff of the DeS, and started the casualization of the "Souls genre" with things like the removal of wearing down equipment + Estus Flasks (DeS has consumable healing items and magic only).

DeS is the easiest game in the genre and some of the most broken spells like a revive that heals you on death

you can still save scum in all these games though, it just requires 1 extra step on either console or pc of exiting the game, making a backup - turn off auto-sync for cloud data on pc and console and then exit the game, drop your save you want to make into another folder on pc or on cosnole make a cloud save point or use a usb stick - then when you die and fuck a npc quest or don't get the rare drop you want you can just reload that save you made - it might seem like a lot but it's pretty easy to do since the games load in and out so fast and don't have 100 title cards when booting up - every hour or two you can just make a hard save - i've read that it can soft-ban you if you do it too much, especially in regards to ds2 and soul memory but i've never done it enough i suppose to actually trigger that from happening so it must only be for people who constantly reset their profile over and over

Neat yeah. Definitely excited to play DeS someday. I still love DkS though.

DaS isn't a "ripoff" of DeS, it's a refinement of the original formula. It takes what was already present and makes changes to it, and additions, to make the game its own unique thing.
The franchise's redundancy begins with Dark Souls 3, with Elden Ring being pretty much the exact same game as it but in an open world.

Elden Ring is the biggest jump since DeS to DaS and feels like a realization of what From has been trying to make since KF.

yes. they designed the entire game, including the failure states
many game "designers" never think about it. they give you a linear rollercoaster ride and, if you're lucky, you get checkpoints. if not... well, here's quick save and quick load. design your own experience, I guess?
I think that's a huge part of why souls-likes and rogue-lites exploded in popularity, even if people don't necessarily think about it or verbalize it. they're actual games. complete games. and people like games

I don't think there's any sort of connection with what the Souls games are now and what FromSoft set out to achieve when making the King's Field games, my man.
I do believe that Elden Ring is Miyazaki's intended vision for the games, but I don't see how there's any significant leap from DaS3 and Elden Ring. They share so much DNA they feel close to playing the same game, only Elden Ring isn't a linear experience.

Most linear story based single player games are disposable entertainment only meant to be played once over the release weekend, they have as much automation as possible because they're not really meant to be games.

That makes it far easier. You get limited flasks per bonefire vs unlimited heals.

DeS is hilarious. I love how the game gets harder the more you die. Usually it's the opposite.

DS1 base flask is better than the shittiest grass in DeS and DS1 zones are much shorter, a ten flask charge is almost overkill most of the time especially if you upgrade the flask effect at all. DS2 and DS3 nerfed estus for a reason.
