I am not a game dev but can someone explain to me why it's looked down upon if a developer makes games using assets sold in the engine they are using? Asset flipping or whatever you call it. Why is this looked down upon?
we had a good thing you stupid son of a bitch
>>712903694why does that matter if the game is good?
>>712903653 (OP)It's generally seen as lazy, and giving up artistic vision for ease.
That said, I don't think anyone minds if you use unity assets for, fucking, barrels or tables or mundane shit like that.
>>712903653 (OP)Well if you are doing a good enough job non even notice or call you out for using assets
But if you do a bad job assets look obvious and ugly and cheap
>>712903743just hire someone to do the 3d models for your game

>stock textures from a CD
>stock textures from an engine
>>712903823See this is what I think it is. Guilt tripping and shaming just to give people jobs
>>712903653 (OP)>WhyIt means that you're fucking lazy and your game might end up looking like that other way worse game instead.
>>712903653 (OP)Asset flips usually use ONLY bought assets or like 99% bought assets.
Most games have bought assets and it's fine for generic props that fit with general artstyle but asset flips are looked down upon because most often they are shitty games that are just pumped out quick with little care hoping some gulliable idiot will buy it.
There are few decent games that were made by one programmer so he bought all art assets but when you have like 100 scam asset flips due to sheer number of them for every 1 actual game with bought assets then it's no wonder there's a huge stigma.
>>712903653 (OP)Because you got caught.
Which means you did it shittily and lazily and your game is trash and reflects that. No good game gets called out for being a lazy asset flip. Good devs don't even get questioned - like RE4 just bought most of its textures from a texture CD, which is buying assets, and people drool over its art direction.
If your game is so disjointed and slapdash that even non-artists can tell, you're just kind of shit.
>waltuh
>put your dick away waltuh
>I'm not having sex with you right now waltuh
was he right?
>>712903878I personally think that different assets make the game more unique, but yeah by all means you can still use stock assets if the game is great. people are playing shit looking games all the time because the gameplay is fun
>>712903653 (OP)Uncannyness of seeing it repeated in other games
try editing it or some shit, or at least go through those fucking tutorials you have ignored for years
>>712903653 (OP)Back in the day if a game had reasonably good graphics then you would expect it to be a solid game that had some time/effort put into it. Not always but this usually true.
Nowadays it doesn't mean anything because you can buy everything, drop them into a template and call it a day.
The sooner we accept that good graphics don't mean anything the better.
>>712904432To say they "don't mean anything" is a bit reductive. There's plenty of arguments to be made about distinctive art style, UI design, and I could even use non-vidya examples like how brand logos are soulless due to minimalistic design. Simplicity should be a tool, not a crutch. Gameplay still matters the most.
>>712903653 (OP)>go see a movie>half the costumes and props are from a movie you've already seen
>>712904616By good graphics I'm talking about photorealism more than stylized.
A good stylized game you always assume (even if not true) is entirely custom artwork.
>>712903743if you're a small studio then it's fine and understandable
if you'e a big company studio then if you can't even be bothered to make original assets to give your game an original visuals then that's just a bad sign of probably other shits you're cheaping out too

>>712904661>>712904812not to mention movies already use real life objects like cans, screwdrivers, various types of cars, etc, etc instead of making their own
this idea that everything should be made from scratch for vidya is retarded
>>712904895No it refuted your point
>>712903743Thats a big if.
>>712903743one thing people are forgetting is that when this stigma came about we were coming of the tail end of some of the biggest increases in graphical fidelity and hardware capabilities we would EVER see.
people expected better and newer shit with each new game.
asset flipping often meant reusing older stuff that didn't look as nice as what was possible now.
so you weren't just saving money, you were compromising on quality as well.
>>712904985Aren't all modern RE Remakes asset flips? They make a new mainline game then the next remake uses assets from that game. That seems to be the pattern
Every big game now uses megascans and I don't see people bitching about it. It's only indie devs that aren't allowed to use assets.
>>712903653 (OP)its just that most of the time they are low effort games
so since the game is already shit people associated asset flip with slops
but in few rare cases when the game is decent then only anti-shill will then use asset flip as the way to attack it
>>712904741Then yes, I agree completely. They spend too much money and resources on pointless things like raytracing when they could use simple dev tricks that we figured out decades ago for more or less the same result. Then they could focus on other things with that time and money like polishing gameplay or even more levels.
>>712905002No it didn't, hollywood sucks ass.
>>712905002it didnt.
the first movie you showed was the most popular of an iconic movie, starship troopers
the second was from a later season of a power rangers spinoff that was known for lower production values but still did very well
the last was from firefly, which despite its cult following was sabotaged and canceled early one.
each showing was a degeneration in quality.
>>712903743>>712903653 (OP)people only complain about asset flips because they are shit

>>712904985>>712903743>>712903694>>712903653 (OP)>>712905058No because Capcom has to make the damn assets in the first place. OP clearly asks about games that buy their assets from the asset store.
Also, for a more corporate reason, making your own assets helps secure the IP for the future. If you guys recall, the PUBG devs tried to sue Epic Games for copying their game formula and didn't have enough proof that PUBG had enough "uniqueness" to be considered its own thing enough to be copied, because it was a game made with most generic assets.
>>712905580No you tried to do a sarcastic statement stating that this doesn't happen in movies and you were wrong and backpedaling so hard you have to pretend to be another anon.
>>712905702>No because Capcom has to make the damn assets in the first placeNo it's about seeing assets used again that you saw somewhere else. Where an asset store is one place this can happen it can happen in other places or pillaged from a game you own
>>712905824>Where an asset store is one place this can happen it can happen in

>>712905995Right after you type it again but in English.
>>712906034It is in perfect English pajeet. Not my fault you can't read.
>>712903653 (OP)It's only really an issue if it's obvious. Most small teams do because it's a ton of work to make everything from the ground up. Most devs are just smart enough not to use a dozen mismatched asset packs and throw them together into a game where they stick out. Even big name devs reuse a ton of assets between their own games because why wouldn't they?
>>712903653 (OP)It's mostly going to be cheap games. For the most part a 3d model is made specifically for the engine/movement scheme of the game. So it will never be smooth looking. You have the platforming games that are popular for like a month and that's about it.
But honestly I think game devs hold themselves to a weird standard. If they've already created all the assets I see no issue in making a whole new game using them. Ie majoras mask. Nowadays games are so big there's a lot assets that are hardly even paid attention to. They could make smaller scaled games based in only small portions of the game amd expand their universe instead of just dlc packs focused on the main caste.
>>712903653 (OP)Asset flippers take random assets from the engine asset stores, bolt them together without proper coherency into something vaguely resembling a game and they sell that on Steam.
If a proper developer uses assets from the store to make a game, 99% of people will never even realize that store bought assets were used.
Asset flipping isn't the act of using store bought assets, it's taking store bought assets and game frameworks and bolting them together without any vision just to make a quick buck. The point isn't to make a game, the point is to create something to sell.
>>712903653 (OP)>using assets sold in the engine That happens all the time and 99% of the time nobody gives a shit as long as the game is alright and has some original assets that blend in with the bought ones.
>asset flippingThis refers to devs who just grab a bunch of asset repackage them as a game to make a quick buck. It's essentially a form of spam.

>>712903743Because if you're a big company it's seen as being unable to use your manpower to upgrade models or textures and therefore lazy or a misappropriation of your staff.
If you're a smaller company you can get away with it because people understand it required a decent budget to constantly be cycling stuff out.
I have no issue with reusing assets as long as you have a reason for it and it doesn't look out of place, though From Soft in particular is a bit egregious with their use of the exact same skeleton moveset and model over and over in every Souls game and Elden Ring having random brand new enemies having half their moveset be an older game's moveset when ER had a much higher budget than their normal titles.
