It's a major stepping stone to an eventual source port, though. It's like 80% of the work

A source port will let you do it. That's why this is exciting. A source port would let you do it on any device of your choosing and pass the save data back and forth however you want.

Read the OP image, the devs themselves said they've finished the most important work.

The outstanding stuff is things like the NES code, which they're still working on, but their existing effort is enough to mod the game and built it with mods.

I've seen decomp projects be stuck at the last 1-2% for months.
The Sonic Advance 2 decompilation hit 100% decompiled in January, but has been stuck at 92% matching code since. It's enough though that they've been able to build a proof of concept PC port with a bigger display area (240x160 -> 426x240)

Cuyler, the main guy working on this, has already used his experience here to make a huge overhaul mod to the GCN game called Animal Crossing Deluxe. It adds all the stuff from e+, as well as a few QoL changes from the later games such as Bells automatically going into your wallet when picked up, or the option to disable the acre transitions.

Knowing this it's very likely an actual PC port will come out of it. Cuyler has been super involved with this sort of thing for years. He started off just working solo on a translation for e+ which eventually turned into all this.

Actually yes, some tools made with ai are helping the decomp process. It's also however the majority talented dedicated individuals that want to challenge themselves.
The funny thing is we had this ability to decomp and Recomp for decades ever since the start of emulation. It's just emulation was easier in the beginning.
