What went wrong?

They made it too difficult to simply play 4-player local in standard 3-lap races.

Pauline only has one extra outfit, she needs more.

How is it difficult? You go to VS mode and you select whichever courses you want with however many players you want with the exact same mechanics as a premade grand prix.
Also, why in the fuck is everyone so fixated on playing the same lap three times when the game has so many track configurations where you do three different things instead? I legitimately do not understand.

Personally I wish there were more options to play knockout tours in custom configurations and I wish the open world had more to do (or at least kept track of what you had done more directly). The sticker icons are too tiny, so it doesn't feel exciting to get a new one. I don't even know what I would have wanted as unlockables (maybe gate the costumes/characters more?) but a checklist of missions would have been nice.

Non-Switch 2 owners are pretty jealous huh?

the effort put into making the open world was not worth it when playing normal 3 laps is way more fun. they could have still done knock out tour by just ripping off what sonic crossworlds does by having people warp on the 3rd lap and it would probably be better for it. the game would also probably look better since they dont need to worry about day night cycle shit. they also would have had time to make more actual courses too. so ya open world was a mistake. grinding and wall riding is good, not sure if they made straight driving too good though, but that wouldnt be as much of an issue if there was more actual courses instead of intermissions

The same lap is a well designed course tailor made for racing on while the different laps has one well designed course at the end and two straight lines. The game being designed around the three different laps has also negatively affected some of the real courses and there are two tracks that are basically just circles.

Literally nobody ever played Mario Kart and thought "now that the race is over, I wish I had to get on the highway and drive to the next race instead of just appearing there"

the intermission courses are pretty much straight lines with very few things you can do to go faster, so doing 3 laps with actual designs is way better and cant be that bad since its been the norm since forever. If the intermissions were actually well designed then it would be a different story but they're not

Funny thing is if they wanted players to be free to drive around between waiting for tracks to be voted for they could have just had a hub world as a separate level like Diddy Kong racing. They already did something like that with Splatoon 3. And they could have managed that switch 1 hardware and released it years ago.
