It's part of a fairly abstract environment that exists in a sort of black hole / pocket dimension.
This floor in particular appears as a hedge maze or garden of some kind but there's also a kind of mass-surveillance system hidden deeper within.

In the original, the combo of unmarked teleports (had to break out pen and paper for those) and random pitfalls with piss easy combat made for an extremely tedious experience that put me to sleep. Redux added a sub app to detect teleport locations and pitfalls, while also giving us Impossible mode for more difficult fights, it was much better even if the art is ass.
