BM's level design is generally bigger, and enemies, like the Marines, are more accurate hitscans that can run&shoot at the same time. Leads to more "stop&pop" cover shooting gameplay compared to HL1 where you had more cover to weave through and it was moreso about repositioning enemies, like the marines, with your movement and weapons.
That kind of Quake influence mixed with the fast-paced immersive sim light elements are what made me love HL1s combat, and not really gravitate towards BM(and HL2, at least until Ep2)'s combat.
