He's the only NPC in the game that had some semblence of prose-kino, and Zelda games were always good with its prose-kino, until Skyward Sword happened. Arguably TP and the DS games as well. Actually, lump in Minish Cap as well, but the rest of the Zeldas were full of simple, evocative dialogue and musical elements.

Outside of furry homosexuality, he was loved because he's the only "roaming" NPC in the game. When you're going from point A to point B and all you're encountering is monsters and empty fields/mountains it's nice to see a familiar and friendly face once in a while
