They really undersold the backwards compatibility in their marketing of this thing.

Right now, you will buy and play Doom 2016. The real game you need to play after is Doom Eternal, but 2016 is a warmup. There is a VERY good reason for that (meaning that the the sequel is exponentially far more brutal, and treats bosses as regular enemies). Never played The Dark Ages, but will get to that.

Also, your PC should be capable of handling the first two.

PS1 games didn't see a significant performance increase on PS2. Load time increases were BARELY noticeable and resolutions and framerates were completely unaffected. Picture quality was essentially the exact same. Same with PS2 on PS3. PS2 load times weren't even better on PS3, from what I remember.
The Switch 2 has massive affects, that make completely unplayable games run flawlessly. Major framerate issues in games like Pokémon Scarlet/Violet are gone completely.
The performance of many games has more than DOUBLED and image quality overall is improved in most games.
It's so much better compared to what I've seen in the past from backwards compatible consoles.
