i think that "drifting" is stupid. its a dumb and unfun mechanic that ends up dominating everything about the game. racers would be more fun if there were no drifting and you actually had to focus on driving and turning. with drifting the entire game just becomes one big drift fest and it doesnt even feel like racing at that point.

I agree because it gives too much control, like it's effectively a "hairpin turn" toggle. You'll never take a corner too fast in Mario Kart and slam into a wall. It's too shalllow.

Drifting is fine if you have other mechanics too. There's this never-to-be-released indie kart game The Karters 2 and they thought that it would be good idea to have infinite reserve/boost system so the game pretty much is just all about hitting frame perfect miniturbos and staring more at the fucking boost meters than the actual game.

Drifting is acceptable when it is merely a natural consequence of the game's physics. Games such as the older Generally, or the more recent Art of Rally, are games where you will drift around corners, but because it is the best way to maintain the car's momentum on low-grip surfaces.
Games with dedicated drift buttons are generally the most problematic.

I'm more of an extremist. The Kart racer style where you just mindlessly hold the drift button on any curve is boring. Either give me pure realism where drifting is bad and you have to focus on your lines, or go the max like Initial D arcade stage where you have considerable control over your drift angle and have to take physics into account.

Drifts which gradually slow you down until you get a miniturbo are gay. Drifts which retain your momentum allowing for sharp turns at full speed are fun.

this was the best racing game i'd played in years
i bought it out of nostalgia over Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver - which I'd played as a kid - expecting to just check it out and refund in <2 hours and then played through the whole campaign because it was so solid
there is drifting but you don't get a speed boost out of it like in MK, it's primarily for making turns
instead you have a persistent boost meter which charges up as you drift and is used at the press of a button, with different cars have different types of boosts
i really recommend pirating it, just don't buy any of the MTX slop and don't expect an active multiplayer scene

What games actually have GOOD drifting? Drifting is cool and fun if done right. Most enjoyment I've gotten from drifting in a game was accidental well done drifting in gta 5's singlplayer, which felt fun and special because it wasn't intended and was a result of the physics, yet the physics weren't really designed around that, so that made it feel special.

Drifting should result in a lower exit speed than properly taking the turn, but I'm fine with it existing.
On the other hand, slipstream bonuses can go fuck themselves outside of 1v1 races. With larger groups it turns into an anti-catch-up mechanic where falling away from the pack means you no longer get the easy free speed boost that everyone else gets.

Initial D arcade stage is the only one I can think of, because the game is built around the drifting. It's very physics based. Done entirely by jerking the wheel and dropping gears or braking, and continuing to use the wheel to adjust your angle through the drift. And the game takes into account your angle and speed for your drifts as well.

I'm generally not fond of advanced techniques in kart racers, since they turn every race into a skill check and distract from the actual racing aspect. CTR'S boost mechanics are a good example, every race was determined by how well you could do this one thing, and people that couldn't had no hope of winning.

I tried the latest playtest after the dev delayed the game's release AGAIN.
It has glowing wheels like CTRNF so you don't have to always watch the drift meter, and you can delay the 1st and 2nd of the triple boosts with seemingly no penalty.
I don't know what's taking him so long, it felt virtually the same as the playtest I tried back in 2023.

Agree with OP completely.
the OG MK on SNES, as primitive as it is, actually had more realistic driving physics than any of the newer ones. Once you hit a certain speed you actually get oversteer when cornering without even needing to touch the R buttons.. It was actually challenging and satisfying to master. The different types of bumps or terrain scattered across the track also greatly effect the karts grip and handling.

Any of the newer MKs have become more and more of a mario party with each release.
Where players are at a disadvantage if they don't drift every slight bend in the road, or mash the trick button on every tiny bump.

I've got a hacked MK8 where I edited the stats and item tables to completely remove the mini turbos and increase the differences between accel/speed and weight stats, and also greatly reduce the chaotic items..

Honestly it's a breath of fresh air just being able to focus on the road and drive how you want.

With zero knowledge of racing (and racing games in general, since I don't even play marika) I would change drifting to become a passive thing from an active mechanic. The way it would work would be:
>Every track has perfect lines across every turn
>Following these lines above a specific speed boosts your speed more and more the closer to perfect you get to following them
>Following behind someone's slipstream will increase your acceleration and eventually give you a boost too

People who want games to play themselves. Or is it because of age? We should stop people aged over 30 from playing videogames or at least partaking in discussions about what makes good vidya. Most people in the 30-45 age bracket grew up watching jrpg cutscenes thinking they were the greatest games of all time. Just let that sink in for a moment.

>Drifts into your heart
They actually added clutch kick. This is all I ever wanted from my racist game.

Which Midnight club should I start with ?
Drifting through Paris looks cool but I guess LA has better gameplay ?

Same but we should also get rid of turning because it ends up becoming one big turn fest and it doesn't even feel like racing at that point. Steering might need to be entirely removed actually.

I never liked the trick mechanic Mario Kart introduced. There's zero skill or depth or thought involved, it just amounts to tapping R or whatever after every jump for a free speed boost. I never feel anything any time I go through one of those segments in a track where they set up like 10 jumps in a row for you to trick off of, it's just a dumb mechanic.

>Or is it because of age?
Lookup gamerdad on reddit and you'll understand. "Games" like RDR2, The Witcher and nu GoW are built for these people. It seems that beyond indies, you're stuck with interactive SIMS playgrounds for manchildren, or shitty woke/coombait non-games created to advertise an agenda before being a fun game (Baldur Gate 3, Stellar Blade)

Yeah, that's exactly what turned me off from mario kart 8 when I emulated it to see what all the fuss is about. To be fair though, drifting to gain boost in kart games comes with the package, it's to be expected. These games are just not for me, I'm playing iracing.
