He only has himself to blame. There's a large element of luck in MK, but you can anticipate these things to an extent. He would have lost his mushrooms regardless but he wouldn't be so poorly positioned if he tried holding on to them a bit longer.

The amount of tech you can do to get ahead in this game is insane, anyone who doesn't put in the hours you do would have no chance if it weren't for items.

Mario Kart has always been an RNG game where luck matters as much as skill if not more. Sure, the best player will win most of the time, but you can get fucked over and there's nothing you can do. That's part of the appeal, it means actual children can beat grown ass men who've been playing for longer than they've been alive if the items pan out right.
Go play trackmania or forza or gran turismo if you want the best player to win every time.

the main reason item play is so obnoxious in world is because there's not enough pack separation
which is itself caused by the tracks being too simple and the more complex mechanics not making you go that much faster than just holding A and steering

it's too difficult to pass someone driving worse than you if you don't have an item, so you just end up with this huge clusterfuck clump of chaos you can only escape from by praying for the right items
