Arkane games are incredibly overrated. Every one of them is just a shit version of a better game from the 90s. So yeah Prey 2017 sucks balls but not for the reasons the Gaylord journos listed.

I was honestly disappointed with SS1's map/exploration, it looks a lot more complex than it actually is. Still, a lot of fun for a metroidvania junkie like me, though I can't see why it's considered an immerse sim, there was barely anything of that nature in the game. Maybe SS2 focuses more on immersive sim elements.

Prey is in a weird spot where I think the fans of it overrate it, but then everyone else (especially journos) underrated it. In terms of a AAA immersive sim it was a breath of fresh air with an interesting story and some good ideas/mechanics. However, not all of the ideas were fully realized and it felt like the last 1/3rd was rushed and they were afraid of it being too hard so gave you infinite access to resources through the recycle mechanic.
If we're going by 5 being an actual average game then I give it like a 7.5/10, maybe an 8/10 if I am very generous. It is a very good game. Not great, but if you want to play a modern immersive sim you really have no choice.

Yeah, nuPrey is actual dogshit. Creatively bankrupt "black goo" enemies, artistically bankrupt sterile corridors, the guns are all boring shit, the shooting gameplay is unremarkable, only the mimic alien power is any memorable and it's basically useless from a gameplay perspective, the story and all the supporting NPCs are shit, it's woke, even the EPIC TWIST at the end is wasted since the protagonist is such a nothingburger the player will feel no relation to him.

Zoomers desperately want to experience their own Deus Ex or System Shock but this trash heap doesn't measure up. Even Bioshock shits all over this, and that's really embarrassing.

the gimmick of lil blackies being objects to pop out and scare you runs out of steam real quick though, the enemies are real easy to kill and don't do a lot of damage so what's the point

Prey 2017 was a broken fucking mess at launch, and particularly before the day 1 patch when reviewers had it. They wrote honest reviews based on the game that existed at that time, and people got pissy about it.

The 4/10 review was a guy who had replacement saves sent by Arkane multiple times, and the game breaking inventory bug re-appeared every time. (It was caused by using the central elevator, which would make random inventory items disappear.)

Prey 2017 still has game breaking crash bugs that can pop up, especially on consoles, making progression impossible.

This game is the culmination of all the lessons that was brought by immersive sims of the past. Prey 2 was it and it bombed. Its legacy is just going to be shelved for the foreseeable future despite being a hallmark of the genre.

It's still a meme to me when such a philosophy doesn't describe why i like Thief more than System Shock. They'd almost be alien games if it weren't for the dark engine. I ask people can you point me in the direction of games like Thief and the response i get is some game that isn't about sneaking around in the shadows and I'm like: that's not what i asked for. I asked for a game that lets me sneak pass guards and get loot. Possibly more open in the level design.

Prey is great, but going pure human/typhon is awful dogshit. Typhon especially because I spent probably half the game fucking with my inventory because you can't upgrade space. The other really shit part is the big retard typhon that pops up every 20 minutes or whatever. There's a quest where you can bait it away, but you only get to do that like 3 times before it doesn't work. Killing is just a massive waste of resources so you just have to hide and afk for 5 minutes until it leaves.
