Anyone else played the demo of vangaro tactics? It was part of the steam next fest.
I like the art direction, makes it look like a flashgame. Sadly the balance issues regarding capturing/flipping cities make me a little worried. Infantries at full HP capture cities on the same turn they begin capture. If they aren't at full HP, it takes them two turns to do so at a rate of 10 points, no matter if they're at 9 or 2 HP. I think this was introduced to correct the stally nature of games especially on AWBW where flipping certain properties even on the middle of the map takes ages but idk

Still baffles to me the only Advance Wars clones is Wargroove 1. They even fuckes up Wargroove 2 and that one that released a couple months ago.
It can't be that difficult to make turn-based modern military game.

I could do it, but I dunno what I'd bring to the table that just playing on AWBW or replaying the existing AW games doesn't accomplish. That, and I've already got a project taking my time.
On a base level lot of AW is very simple, and adding or reducing stuff from it can have consequences that may not necessarily lend to a better game.

That's why I didn't change any of the "core" of the game when working on a clone. The biggest change was messing about a bit with the unit comp.

No Artillery, but Rockets are more mobile
Slower Bombers
A new Striker unit that hits hard, but takes hits poorly too.
That kind of stuff.

They're missing the soul. Advance Wars is super simple but it's held up by the WW2 designs, CO designs & CO themes. For example, OP's game looks pretty good design unit wise, but the CO's look a bit weird and if there's no good music, it won't hold up...

I played a couple and have few AW clones on wishlist just to monitor them but I seriously doubt that any of them will score any success - they all seems to completely missing core idea behind AW. I cannot really precise what exactly but all of them are simply not fun to play. And all suffer from one or another balance problems.

the problem is that none of these games stand out very much, let alone bein improvements.
Somehow most fail at just making appealing CO designs alone and the graphics often look cheap even though AW is just very basic but coherent design.

Battle Worlds: Kronos was more of a Battle Isle clone than an Advance Wars clone. Of course, there's similar pedigree so they end up similar but they're more like distant cousins than directly related.

Anon this genre is way bigger and older than Advance Wars. I think the problem with the AW clones is their creators only know or care about AW so they never look beyond it for more ideas.
At a fundamental level the Wars series concept is just "traditional turn-based operational level hex and counters wargame, except with cute anime graphics". There's about a thousand ways you could make that if you don't get hung up on the specific gameplay mechanics of the famicom wars series.
These indie game designers need more genre literacy.

Days of Ruin perfected a lot of the balance and every time one of these clones try to deviate to make themselves unique they fuck them up. One of the biggest things is the pricing of units (especially since DoR fixed naval) and every time one of these clones tries to fuck with it they absolutely ruin the game.

AW is extremely simple in design. You need weeb characters and a lighthearted setting to even be successful with such a game in asia.

Can you give some examples? I think that Tiny Metal was almost carbon-copy in terms of prices and game was comfortable to play as a result but still, tying firepower to number of units in squad was screwing up some units instead (like how Fortress, local version of Bomber, also could fight other air units and had same firepower no matter what hp he had as he was alone. Expansion increased AA options instead, making him more like Bomber - huge firepower and price but vulnerable).

The only masterclass for AW is that it has good level design. I assume most indie devs only do self testing. Every person has a blind spot for their own kind of mistakes.
