The more I play the game the more I kind of dislike it. The combat rarely changes at all throughout the entire game and 30 hours later you are fighting the same enemies and using the same skills the entire game. This game does a really good job at hiding how shallow it is. I like the game but I don't think it should have been stretched out to be 40+ hours with how static and shallow they made the combat with all the rpg mechanics.

I agree, first playthrough I was bored/burned out by the end. But that's because I did everything. I did a recent playthrough just golden pathing it and enjoyed it more. Works better as a linear action game. All the open world side quest stuff is just boring padding. The good ending isn't even worth it because Lily is a whatever character.

Personally, I try not to have any expectations these days. That demo was what sold me on the game. I liked the demo for the demo. Most of the game could've been like that and I would've been happy.

But I've been disappointed by demos as well. I really liked the FF16 and NieR: Automata demos but I didn't end up liking the full games. I'd still rather have a demo than not though. Like the Nioh 3 Alpha Demo or Rebirth demo. I really didn't like either of them so it's made it easy for me to write them off my list of games I'm interested in.

Not really, it basically comes down to single target and aoe skills. Beta skills already have that covered. Burst skills are just stronger versions that give you cinematic iframes and stun enemies that survive for easy i win panic buttons.

Any enemy that can be thinned out by guns in a reasonable time can be killed even easier with an aoe beta skill. I have around 40 hours in the game and never really found guns to be useful because things die quicker with melee. I would consider Nioh or Rise of the Ronin to be the games most easily comparable to just on a pure gameplay basis. I also just got done playing Rise of the Ronin last month with the pc port so I'm coming off from that game which I think had vastly superior combat. They are both parry heavy games with similar combat but RotR simply had way more variety despite every enemy basically being human in the game. The different weapon types and styles added way more substance and variety to the game than beta / burst skills. Even Nioh 1 which came out in 2017 had a better gameplay flow.

Stellar Blade's biggest flaw is that there is simply no variety in how you fight or approach fights. Burst skills don't add anything of substamce, they are just stronger versions of beta skills that use a separate meter but it does nothing to change up encounters like how switching to a different weapon or stance does like in Nioh or RoTR.

Also fuck actual fromsoft souls games, they all have janky ass combat.

When I first tried out the game because of /v/ shilling, I thought it would have the flow of breaking shields to stagger then combo enemies before they can regen it. I wouldn't dispute the superiority of Team Ninja's combat systems in comparison to Stellar Blade's. In particular, the Nioh games. Big fan of Nioh 2. In fact, after Nioh 2, most of the games I played in the following years felt bad because they didn't match up to Nioh 2's combat system. It kind of ruined other games for me for a while. I've since learned, it's a poor idea to try and expect anyone else to match Team Ninja in the combat system arena.

But I'm still willing to take a game on its own terms for what it offers to see if I enjoy that. Which is to say that I can still enjoy a game even if its combat system is as simple as Palworld's. I know, it's not a game you would compare to RotR, but it's a good example. I try to take a game on its own terms.

In the case of Stellar Blade, I enjoyed not only the combat system, but also the enemies I encountered throughout the game. The variety I experienced was through the enemies I fought and I had a fair amount of fun coming across new enemies and learning their movesets, getting the parry and dodge timings right and finding the right way to dance with them. The Burst/Beta skills are fairly simple and flashy, but I enjoyed as well. Much like how I enjoyed the cinematic finishers after depleting an enemy's Balance or finishing them off in a fight. It wasn't a Team Ninja game, but I didn't want a Team Ninja game.

Both Strangers of Paradise and Wo Long's demos didn't grab me, so I passed on them and RotR also looked subpar compared to Nioh 2. I just kept thinking if I wanted a THAT experience, I would just go back to Nioh 2.

But I did want some other different experiences and I liked what Stellar Blade offered overall. From the combat, to the exploration, to the platforming, to the gun only levels, to the puzzles, do the most obvious aspect, the fanservice. It was great. It was so also different.

Hearing that you're coming from TNgames, I'm not surprised by your criticisms. It makes a lot of sense.

The parrying and dodging feel satisfying and there are tons of follow up options to be agressive. This game reminds me of sekiro most of all. And I would agree, while also adding that one of the biggest criticisms of Sekiro is that it wants you to play the game in a very strict way, where as Fromsoft's other games give you a lot more options when it comes to builds and weapons. So, even a GOTY has limitations, which is fine because a gaming experience should have a focus instead of trying to be everything or just too many things.

There's also the issue of objectivity. I know most peole want to be objective in our assessment of the quality of a video game. Objectivity sounds good, but really, most people's gaming experiences, especially related to the fun factor, is subjective and personal. Outside of very broken or terrible games, it kind of comes down to subjective preferences. That's true of game mechanics as well.

Which is one thing I kept thinking about when shitposters would often come in asking for gameplay discussion in the threads. Dante puts on a pair of fists and starts punching; Soulsman John does the same. Souls weapons also have their own use cases and playstyles. John Darksouls might need stat investment to use weapons, but you can still go use anything you want for your playstyle. By the way, a build is just a playstyle, literally no different to Royal Guard vs Trickster.

You keep going on about "builds" and "RPG leveling" despite the first term being completely congruous with action games and the latter being downplayed extremely in Souls to the point it basically doesn't matter.

Allow the player to cancel any attack, but, I don't know, put some kind of cost behind the flashier and stronger stuff so you, as the player, can have the option to stop it or keep going with it even with the risk of losing a good chunk of hp to the incoming enemy attack.

It depends, but largely yes. TAA alone will look better than DLSS at quality, because afaik TAA will not lower the rendering resolution by itself, you have to do that in the settings. DLSS at 90% Render Resolution (RR) will look better than TAA at 90% RR. DLSS is essentially TAA with a better AI driven algorithm. DLAA is rendering the game at native resolution and uses the AI tensor cores to reduce aliasing, so that will look the best.
