Particularly when pulling out of a driveway what few monitors you do have for anything not immediately in front of you are very narrow and skewed, you mostly have to operate on how big you 'feel' the car is.
If you could get out of the car and watch yourself drive in the third person with a clear and constant view of your size and the obstacles around you, it would feel a lot less uncertain
