Let's say you're making a creature collecting game where the player can capture and carry around a number of monsters.
For obvious reasons, you can't use balls to capture and store them. What should be used instead?

I think discs would be most ideal, it's not like Monster Rancher will have a problem with it. Discs can be thrown like frisbees and is easy enough to carry around.

Nah, fuck that, gimme special bullets that capture monsters. And then when you want to deploy them, you load them into your gun and shoot them out.

Ok, so there are these collars, if you put it over a creature's head, it shrinks to a snug but comfortable fit. The creature can retreat inside the collar whenever it wants but can't come out again without someone rolling it along the ground. Different collar sizes so you need a high tier collar to catch bigger monsters.

Capturing doesn't need to be tied to an item at all, it could simply be a game mechanic.
But cards, stone tablets, gems, and rings could all be satisfying. Do one with a more overt demonic subjugation vibe and have you throw a stylized shackle that will show up on a captured monster's design.

sealing them in cards is the obvious best choice. it's visually pretty cool and its incredibly marketable since you can then print cards with cool art for all the monsters, even before you decide to make a TCG.
If you're successful enough you could even add NFC chips to the cards and actually store your monsters on the physical cards for use at other people's houses or arcades or something.

The capture bullets come in different calibers, and the bigger the monster the bigger the caliber you need
.22 works for small monsters, .38 for bigger ones, all the way up to .455 or .50ae for the biggest/most powerful monsters
Bigger calibers can subdue smaller monsters much easier.

The guns are not magic, they just propel the slugs forward very quickly.
They go over this in the show. The slugs can only transform when they go a certain speed, this is because they evolved for dropping from the roofs of massive hollow-earth-like caves.

What they had was spheres that function similarly to Legends Arceus throwing, but they have completely different functions beyond the extremely basic concept and Pocketpair already had them for a while in their previous game as little pyramids that functioned exactly the same too. Nintendo hasn't won anything by any stretch, so nobody knows whether they'll have to think of something else or just revert the changes back to how it was.

This could actually work for a dark low fantasy setting where cryptid hunters are tasked with putting down lethal or man eating creatures near human settlements.

For cases where there are too many threats but they're vulnerable to regular bullets it plays out as a party battle like SMT, for cases where the threat is singular but resistant or immune to bullets it turns to Pokemon.

My idea has it so the bullet is a separate thing that is fired from a regular gun that also shoots normal bullets and deploys whatever was captured from the bullet where it lands.

Literally any object. You can put their essence or something in whatever you get a hold on and then call them out when needed. If possible the housing vessel would probably affect monster too, so if you store the same monster in a key and a lead pipe they'd have differing stats or something.
