The Tranq gun was a mistake in this franchise. But I guess they couldn't figure out a way to non lethal bosses effectively without a gun.

But Bosses should've just been able to die like how they do die in the actual story. Non lethal should've just been reserved for mooks.

I'm not gonna defend how you could more and more get through these games guns-blazing, but I guess it's neat that it's an option. Did also do many "bloodthirsty" playthroughs in these games for the sake of it.
If you want to blame a game, then it's MGS3 starting this trend. That includes its implementation of the tranq gun (or rather, how the level design makes it a piss easy solution to any problem).
In the context of MGS4, it absolutely makes sense. The game is about a war economy. And it also makes sense for Snake to arm himself appropriate for the job. He gets caught constantly, with unavoidable combat in any games.
Honestly, always loved the gun autism of MGS4. It felt natural and reasonable to pick the best guns for the job, even if you try to not get caught at all. But who knows. You are in a warzone.
If you want to complain about one thing, then it's that there is not enough variety within weapon groups. There is always a best gun for each ammo type. No reason to use the others. I'm looking at you, M4 Custom.

I don't remember it being ever easy in MGS1. It certainly wasn't fun.
The guards in MGS2 were absolute death squads in comparison to the other games. MGS3 was a real downgrade in that regard.
I don't think it's really undeniable that these games made it easier and easier to just pull the trigger with each iteration.

Most of the weapons are unnecessary but they are fun and cool. You can easily get 10+ playthroughs out of MGS4 and still discover cool new stuff. Do keep in mind that fun and enjoyment are important when playing a video game. Thank you for your understanding.
