what's the general consensus on SH4? It's an entirely different concept to the first 3 IIRC but I remember hearing it got a mixed reception.

I think the initial mixed reception has slowly faded and these days 4 is generally seen in a more, yet not strong, positive light. It’s still the black sheep of the original SH games because the gameplay is kinda whack and it definitely peaks early on, but it doesn’t degrade in quality too much for it to be considered overtly shit.

the ai isn't good enough to warrant escorting it around, the combat is just about passable, lighting is kinda weird compared to sh2 and 3 but the character models and rigging are top tier, environments later in the game are needlessly visually repetitive, and the limited inventory (added for no reason but to annoy you) will, well, annoy you.
play it anyway, play it for Eileen
