Should have been
>75/105/160/45/55/70
Same stat total as Steelix, different distribution like Scyther/Scizor. 45 would be the singular Special stat in gen 1.

70 is fucking blazing fast when your competition is Golem (45) and Rhydon (40). Also being much faster while still having access to gen1 Bind would be fucking stupid. Dragonite does it and everyone hates it. It's not even good, it's just annoying.

Youโ€™re damn right he does. You donโ€™t show up with a body like a pile of gravel, swinging with 45 base attack, and expect pity. Game Freak took one look and said โ€œrock snake? Nah, make it pathetic.โ€

Everything about him is designed around the three things he does in Kanto. His stats are annoying to the one class of Pokemon that they're supposed to be (low level shitters without any special moves) and don't do anything for him otherwise. The first place you can catch him is just before the game opens up, so you haven't completely forgotten him. And then he reappears in Victory Road to show you how massively you've outscaled your first real obstacle.
I wish he were a bit more useful as your party member too, but he does his job in the game design.

>high attack
>can't take advantage of it, because speed so low, opponents are practically guaranteed to move first and one move is often all it takes for rock types
>high defense
>can't take advantage of it, because special defense is so low, nobody will ever use physical attacks to attack them
>the mons that do use physical attacks against them are fighting types who have type advantage and sky high attack stats to go along with that
>weak to damn near everything under the sun
Is rock the most unfortunate type?

I don't fuckin know man. I just tried to keep the "good" stats Onix already has while buffing his shitty ones. Move some Attack to Speed or something I dunno. Also Dragonite and Tentacruel are held back by their typings somewhat. Rock/Ground is actually pretty good in gen 1.

I actually used him for the first time ever in a playthrough recently since I got Brilliant Diamond with my Switch 2 and Onix is okay? Maybe itโ€™s because Gen 4 has so many physical attackers so the crazy Defense stat is pretty good. That being said, you really need an Attack boosting nature to get any real value damage-wise, and I still ended up force-feeding it Proteins to get any bang from my buck.
I guess the one upside is that Steelix feels much better and the elemental fang moves are pretty comfy as far as coverage moves go.
Iโ€™m kinda excited to try out Mega Steelix when ZA drops.

steelix is usually good

onix as actually onix is best in hgss, he's an ingame trade that is very helpful in two gyms and not in some spergy AI exploit strat kind of way. You need to take down two self-healing hard hitting physical attackers that are resisted by rock so onix screeching them without dying is extremely welcome

Did rock-only in heart gold a while back and onix definitely is not supposed to be the type of mon you take to the end of the game (at least without evolving, but steelix is not a rock so I had to ditch him). He works good as a utility/support, decent speed stat lets him screech, sandstorm and rock tomb before taking damage most of the time, especially if you scarf him for a meme (like I did). Special attackers still fuck him up quite a lot, and he felt practically worthless by the end game when I got a tyranitar as my sand-setter but hey, he walked (...crawled? slithered?) so that my whole team could run over everything.

When you play enough, there's no real "worst" type. Everything kinda has something going for it, even the types people tend to single out like ice or bug.

He was made to be the first boss you encounter and was there to teach players to stop spamming physical moves or they were gonna get bodied.

There are a lot of gen 1 hacks that change stats but there's always going to be some other changes that put people off.
PureRGB makes Onix really strong, and extremely busted if you do a sidequest to get a special one. A lot of people don't like some of the typing/moveset changes of that hack, though.
