I think the PS3/360 era was the perfect point of game complexity without adding too much unnecessary shit into the mix.

Like with PS4/PS5 games have become a lot more impressive but more often than not it's all shit that doesn't matter and just bogs down the experience. Compare Red Dead Redemption 1 vs Red Dead Redemption 2. On paper, RDR2 is the better game in every category. But RDR1 is just so fucking TIGHT, there's no fat there, it's a solid experience that isn't full of a thousand annoying systems or gimicks or details. Even visually it has a more identifiable style to its realism than RDR2.

I couldn't play RDR2 for more than an hour. The fucking horse didn't listen to me, shopping was annoying, skinning animals was slow, even moving the character around was a chore. The gimmicks and details were overwhelming, in a bad way. RDR is a much better game.
>inb4 nostalgia
I finished RDR and dropped RDR2 on the same day.

It's a shame because I was so excited for it and it might as well have been made by Square Enix because it had nothing in common with RDR1 at all, it shouldn't even have had the RDR name on the box.

Shadow of the Colossus was huge, barren, wide open spaces with no enemies or NPCs or object to bump into. RDR2 has a huge open world, but it's riddled with all sorts of shit that makes your cumbersome and slow horse very annoying.

That was the PS2/GC/Xbox era where you could pump out a competent game in a year even when you had an unfriendly publisher breathing down the development team's neck the whole way through.

I wish that controller had come out... DualShock 3 is lame compared to it.

I agree. I used to think the PS2/Gamecube era was the best but I've changed my mind lately and now think the PS3/360/Wii/DS/PSP era was the peak.

I remember playing FFXIII, looking at the CGI, and thinking, "Wow, I can't wait for graphics like this during gameplay." Maybe on PS4, or definitely on PS5.
How naive I was. Graphics are going backwards.

I dunno. Here is a random selection of games from that generation with the PSP and DS included.
