LA brain melt smog and other smogged out disgusting city slickers are all convinced the entire world is actually covered in thick, stinking homo gas like their disgusting piss covered cities. This is because they cannot afford to see anywhere outside of the city limits

The intention is to simulate how bright days obscure things in the distance due to the atmosphere and humidity.
But the effect tends to be over-exaggerated and just becomes a nuisance like excessive motion blur or heatwave effects; artistry and graphical technical wankery getting in the way of good user experiences.

forests will tend to have this effect more and especially in the morning. Not sure what Minecraft is going for exactly but it's a non-starter anyway because I'm pretty sure you can turn that feature off in settings.

I debated this once briefly with an anon, so I'm not sure if you're referring to me or another, but if it was me, I never said it is normal to be foggy 3 feet from your face, I said it's common for large landscapes to not be clear when they are miles away from you, and that is because large amounts of moisture from the mountain trees, rivers and foilage are evaporating and you are seeing that hazy evaporation more clearly at a great distance. It's a fact of nature. You won't see it on rockier mountains as much but you will on grassy mountain/mountain ranges and mountains with a bunch of trees.

How accurately games are able to portray this effect is another debate, but they are attempting to replicate a real-life phenonmena. BotW probably does it better than most games, I would say. In fact most Nintendo games that have a large scale or scope do it really well.

To retards more effects=better.
Lens flare even though there is no camera to get its lens flared=better
Chromatic aberration that only exists from faulty tech or light water distortion=better
Depth of field that is 1000% exaggerated, that only someone with bad eyesight would see and eyes already have when not focusing on something=better
Motion blur on things that already have natural blur if it's moving fast enough, doubling the blur into pure smear=better
The average gamer and game dev has shit tastes and only copies what they see movies and interprets that as the correct way or "realistic" way to do things.
Their whole idea of experiencing the world in a videogame is through a camera with shitty filters.

>BotW probably does it better than most games, I would say. In fact most Nintendo games that have a large scale or scope do it really well.
Wrong. Not even up for debate. They are all shit because the haze is literally up front covering the whole screen including and behind the character. It's basically like an overlay instead of in the distance. It is not "miles away" like you say.

Sometimes you can find pics like related that are EMULATED with MODS to turn down the fog. This is more accurate. But during my whole playthrough on a vanilla switch it never looked this decent. It was especially bad in enclosed areas and in the forest. The best is at sunset for some reason but still shit.

Usually it's used as a lazy way of making a game run better.
You can render shit with a lot lower poly or with shitty textures when it's far, then add fog to make the crappy textures harder to see.

Genuine question: How the fuck did we get to this state where we have effects to cover up effects to cover up other effects? Shitty fog that covers shitty AA and that all tanks the frame rate so we now need shitty fake frames and vaseline upscaling. Where did it all go so wrong?

Is it brainrot from trying to emulate film and how cameras behave? Is it people being so out of touch with what natural scenery looks like (like how fucking night blind a lot of shader creators must be)? Is it just people following industry standards blindly and not giving a fuck about their own artistic vision?
Anonymous No.713106424 [Report] >>713106870 >>713107919
The problem isn't the anti-soul gas, the problem is the implementation. Depending on atmospheric conditions, volumetric fog should appear far into the distance and objects at 150 meters should be visible without fog, not at 50 centimeters.

Dude. We fucking know it happens in real life. It doesn't mean it looks good or that it should be in every game. Fuck, it shouldn't be in ANY GAME cus it looks like shit. At best there should be options to turn it off like most other graphical effects.

You only get fog IRL when the air is warm enough and there's water nearby to evaporate. But talentless developers put fog everywhere, even places that are clearly too cold or with no logical source of moisture. Also they make the effect way too strong and close, then couple it with absurd bloom and sun glare so everything is washed out.

Semantics. That's what's already implied. It's exasperating to say "they should stop doing X (and implement it the correct way!)"

So yes technically not all fog is bad. But obviously by calling it "anti-soul" we mean the specific way they misuse it.

Idk maybe we should just name it something else since you guys are too slow to understand. I guess your brains are full of smog too.
