Upon replaying Yakuza 0, I was reminded why I loved it so much, and the realization that both Kiryu’s and Majima’s parts are equal narrative genius.

It invokes this very specific emotion of feeling that the entire world is against you, and enables the power fantasy of (literally) fighting back against it, whilst also reminding you of the reality that there will always be someone in your corner whom you can count on in your time of need.

I can’t believe it took a replay for me to understand the gravity of Kiryu’s and Majima’s respective situation

Yokoyama sometimes brings out phenomenal chapters in the likes of 4, 5, and infinite wealth. However, he has the habit of blundering with subsequent land chapters. I’d prefer having a story that stays consistently good rather than fluctuating between peak fiction and nonsensical rubbish.

Eh, you can trace all of the core yakuza series problems to Yakuza 1 itself. Yakuza 0 was forced to write an ending that wouldn’t contradict it, and Kiryu being forced to deal with the consequences of not staying as the fourth chairman for five games straight, despite Daigo making the best of it. I’d even argue the worst thing about Yakuza 1 was killing off so many potentially interesting characters, hence why Yakuza 2 has flashbacks and a 36-year korean mafia conspiracy plan, why yakuza 3 still has forced nishkiyama family drama and a twin brother from the CIA, and why yakuza 0 even exists.

Everything going forward has to permanently acknowledge and build around Yakuza 1’s narrative without contradicting it.

The ending of 6 made it look like the Daidoji faction was already on its way out, and just trying to silence people who learned too much, like Kiryu.
