much of the legend of zelda has parallels with his early heroic fantasy tales, which take places in vague, an undetermined time (just a long time ago), nondescript worlds with little established lore, with little emphasis on the characters and more so the overarching heroic plot (see the king of elfland's daughter, carcassone, the fortress unvanquishable, save for sacnoth, the sword of welleran, etc). I have no idea why Dunsany had such an impact on Japan when Tolkien had none. I assume it was due to the stage plays.
