Why did so many '90s games have that? Did the nerds making them have no self control and just had to put a bit of sci fi in everything they worked on?

I was talking about stuff like Might and Magic, Wizardry and TES. Why do all of them have medieval fantasy on the surface but sci fi if you dig deep enough?

There's a difference between a proper Science Fantasy setting and "we still live in the year like 1000 but we now have shit that is like computers, and we don't use them for anything except for some evil motherfucker to crawl out of them".

Are there any settings where this is done smartly? I.e. people still understand the tech, but due to decreased population density and collapse of global trade they're only able to make crude replicas and e.g. microchip relics are highly valued.

>implying a literal magic wielding wizard and actual cyber android in the same party isn't utter kino
One of the coolest details is healing magic just completely not working for android party members. Instead they come with self repairing healing kits that only work on them

The kind of tech in those games isn't available to us yet, so it is sci fi

I love this cliche. The idea that the world is older and more mysterious than we could ever know just resonates.

Numenera, theres a videogame called Torment tides of Numenera which is supposed to be a spiritual successor to Planescape Torment.

People only have a faint understanding of the tech and theres societies of scholars trying to understand and reverse engineer them.

Because they were developed by devs who, as children, experienced sci-fi and fantasy settings where they bleeded over into each other, where advanced technology was considered magic and the future was a path to shit like psychic powers and cosmic ray superpowers. It wasn't until very recently that "sci-fi" nerds got insecure enough to insist they weren't fantasy.
