From Software really killed "pure action" hack n' slash games, damn. I'm only now going through Nioh 1 and the game has some really hard bosses right from the start, Hino-enma is maybe the third boss in this one and took me almost 40 tries to kill her, and that's after watching a bunch of videos of how to kill her.

I've been thinking it but only now i've been telling people: it's impossible to go back to simple DMC-type games where all you do is button mash and the only time you need to worry about dodging is during boss fights.
Such a shame they won't make Ninja Gaiden 4 into a Nioh-type game (i'm not gonna say soulslike, it really feels like it's own thing to me), the combat is far more engaging than the combat in Sigma 1/2 or Razor's Edge, plus the Ryu's mobility in those games would make the boss fights much more fun.

On a side note: fuck Koei Tecmo for not giving us a decent way of playing Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2, both games on the master collection are barebones as FUCK. I get all excited for Gaiden 2 Black and... ok, it's just Sigma 2, fuck it.

nioh is a souls like, the combat system is focused on 1v1 combat and pattern recognition.
>dmc button massaging
how did you play dmc without using delayed combos, or target combos? button mashing in any hack n slash will result in death outside of easy.
>Such a shame they won't make Ninja Gaiden 4 into a Nioh-type game
thank god, I despise souls combat with a passion. the mechanics are beyond boring and simplistic. the lack of combos and it's slow pace makes everything a snooze fest. I dropped nioh very early because of this. the only good thing I can say about it is that it had a normal control scheme unlike the awful controls of souls slop.

I play everything on normal, i only play on hard games that i like and have already beaten (for the extra challenge). Playing DMC on normal really felt like i could enter any room, a bunch of mobs would run to fight me and all i needed to do was to spam the most basic shit like quick > quick > quick > strong attack to kill them. Now, the boss fights can be really tough until you get their pattern down, that i'll give to you.

Souls combat is like dancing Tango, you gotta be on your feet and know when it's your time to move and when it's the enemy's time to move. If you give players incresingly more challenging boss fights and enemies, they just feel rewarding as fuck to play through.
Meanwhile DMC offers a subpar story (I think 1 is the last one on the timeline and the rest are all prequels?). Shit, i love God of War and they fucked that one up too with a shitty combat that's not engaging.

I think if i want just action-combat slop i'd much rather play some musou spin-off (Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, Persona 5 Strikers) than go back to old school hack n' slash.

>Souls combat is like dancing Tango
attack 3 times
back up and wait for enemy to attack
attack 2 more times
back up again
repeat endlessly until you win
it's basically a real time iteration of turn based combat, with the stamina bar being a copy pate of the atb bar from final fantasy and pattern recognition is a proxy for turn order. if you enjoy it that's fine but the core mechanics are boring, when I tried nioh it didn't feel like a "dance" it felt tedious and all I wanted to do was string combos against a group of aggressive enemies, dmc and ninja gaiden feel like a dance. souls slop feels like a sleeping pill.

Then it's probably why i like it more than traditional hack n' slash, 95% of the games i play are turn-based JRPGs.
