So we know that RE4 is not a survival horror game like 1-3 were. "Survival" of course implies the scarcity, procurement, and expenditure of resources. In RE4 this element and its importance is somewhat negligible.
However, that's because its survival element relies on surviving combat itself through action gameplay rather than resource management.
RE4 is all about spatial awareness, threat assessment, proper positioning, and tactical engagement with enemies. Failure to uphold these skillsets will result in death.
I know there's the "Action Horror" term but I don't really think that properly conveys the survival element that still exists in the gameplay.
Personally instead of Action Horror I would still call it Survival Horror but with an emphasis on Action, so something like Action Survival Horror, like the Action RPG genre.
>>713156503 (OP)Youโre correct in your description of the gameplay but genre labels barely mean anything anyway. The original RE games are not even horror focused or difficult to survive in so you could easily call them action adventure games.
Survival horror is any game where the tension comes from limited resource. RE4 still fits that bill.
>but muh horror
if you're scared by pixels stop dilating
Honestly, RE4 through 6 can't be quantified as full action games, even despite 6's insanity, because they don't really follow every trend and still hold onto all sorts of elements actual shooters and action games don't. The series kinda got really fucking weird, de-actioned, then re-actioned all over again and it baffles me.
>>713156503 (OP)Gallery Shooter.
It incidentally has a very primitive free movement system bolted onto it, but otherwise has more in common with Time Crisis and Virtua Cop than any horror game.
>>713156503 (OP)RE4 is a Air Force SERE training simulator where you're a downed pilot in rural Spain.
>>713156783That kinda completely ignores the importance of movement and positioning in RE4 so no.
>>713156873> positioning in RE4 most encounters are literally solved by funneling, there's few places where you can't just walk back 10 steps and be a turret
>>713156503 (OP)It's in the "LudoKino Masterpiece" genre.

RE4 is just a third person shooter, not a cool genre I know but it is what it is.
Considering how influential 4 supposedly was it's weird how few games like it there actually are. I've played all the good ones and I want more. The last one was the fucking remake of the original.
>>713157007Have you met the Portuguese? They're an unusual and largely despicable people, especially those from the incestuous bloodlines of the Azores.
A little rough don't you think?
