Because that’s a first party Nintendo title on a new console too. The reviewers are incentivized to give it high scores, otherwise they don’t get early free review copies of any upcoming Nintendo IPs on the Switch 2. It’s not the free part that matters but it’s having early copies that matters. It allows them to make reviews as well as guides weeks in advance, then schedule them for when the game comes out or whenever the embargo is up whichever is earlier. If they don’t get their review copy then they have to make content after the game releases but by them everyone will have already looked up reviews and guides and they will have lost most of their potential revenue. The only exception to this is if the game or console is really bad then they’re allowed to give bad reviews which is still 7/10. Nowadays most influencers and reviewers are kiss asses to Nintnedo and Sony because they’re desperate to receive early copies. If you don’t do enough early reviews too then Metacritic might kick you out and implicitly Metacritic wants higher scores so the publishers don’t complain. I don’t blame them but it’s a problem with the whole system. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a 100 metacritic game on a first party game on a new console.

SM64 and OOT was the only times it could have happened, perfect games still didn't all get 10/10s, critics were harsh back then. BOTW was also a perfect but got nowhere near 99, let alone 100. A single clickbait review would bring it down too which wasn't as big of a problem back in the day but that shit is worse than ever.

Because they randomly decide to re-review the same game just cause it got a different console upgrade.

Lots of PS4 games got a PS5 upgrade, and im not talking about re-releases like TLOU, but simple updated that did either the same or sometimes even more than what this TOTK SW2 upgrade does, yet NONE of those got a new review and score.

So why does this keep happening? Cause they arbitrarily decide to re-enter the same fucking game into new competition without the game actually qualifying for it.

I don't understand this opinion, Tears improved on all the shit that made BotW bad. Weapon durability mitigated, more interesting weapons with fusing, more enemy variety, travel easier and funner, core mechanics/abilities way more interesting and flexible. I could never go back to BotW.

I could live with BoTW and ToTK deviating from my design preferences if they hadn't also completely nuked the internet's ability to discuss Zelda without going feral.

Objectively, these are competently designed games and provide a smooth experience. Subjectively, I think games that have been widely panned for being slop manage to provide a better open-world experience than BoTW / ToTK. I would genuinely rather play Fallout 4 than nuZelda.

Fair enough, I can't disagree with that. I dropped BotW not long after completing the main story so I probably put no more than 50 hours into it. I enjoyed TotK enough to 100% it (excluding korok shit) but the ol' faithful hoverbike made it easy

I'm not throwing shit at you for doing it, but the copy-pasted hoverbike design that seemingly everyone used is actually one of the reasons I think the systems in ToTK suck. I had fun screwing around with random flying machines, including blindly flying a wooden beam into the storm clouds (and accidentally landing on the "correct" island to start the quest). However, everyone knows that isn't efficient (or easy to control). ToTK's systems are better for generating social media clicks than they are for providing fun utility.

Really feels like the average ToTK enjoyer just zipped around on popular builds instead of engaging with the systems in a meaningful way, and I think that has a lot to do with how annoying the system is to work with. Doesn't help that the world is big (and mostly empty), making people feel like they *need* to get around quickly.
