Hello Pikmin bros.
Should I play this instead of vanilla Pikmin 1? This romhack basically ports Pikmin 1 over to the Pikmin 2 engine. For reference, I've only ever played 2 and I'm looking to play 1 for a first time playthrough, and I've heard the gameplay in 1 is unpolished.

Pikmin 1 is still more than playable. Even on a casual first-time playthrough I 100%'d it with like 16 or 17 days remaining.

Never encountered this in any of my casual playthroughs and don't even know what it is

The original game had the intention of Pikmin being independent living creatures who sometimes get distracted and don't obey orders exactly, try and enjoy what the original intention was instead of being a sweaty min-maxer.

I forgot a comma. The pikmin don't huddle together when you go on a bridge in Pikmin 1. So if you bring in a group that's too big some of them will just walk into water and die.
The crushing glitch is this bullshit where sometimes when a enemy keels over a pikmin will be deleted beccause it was under it.

It’s pretty good. Pikmin 2 AI isn’t THAT much better than 1’s they just don’t trip as much. Squared only really makes that one crunched area in the Forest Navel easier.

What the fuck? People like Pikmin 2 more than 1? Pikmin 1 is so fucking goated, oh my god. I've beaten Pikmin 1 over 10 times by now, just because i like to go back and replay it trying to complete the game in fewer and fewer days.

The AI is only going to be a problem for you if you go into it expecting a 2025 game, it's Gamecube launch title so understand that you need to be more hands on with the Pikmin. Forest Navel comes to mind, Pikmin are crazy about getting stuck under the little slopes you construct or trying to go to the ship through a path that's still blocked. But the game is still ultra forgiving if it's your first time playing and you lose a lot of Pikmin, the first stage is good to get some new Pikmin and it's not going to be a waste of a day because there's a part of the Dolphin to be collected there.

The first time i played i didn't get the best ending because i ran out of time while trying to carry the part he drops to the Dolphin, but you can remedy that by thinking of the final stage as a 2 days endeavor, first day you're just gonna get everything ready to go, second day is the fight and carrying shit to the ship.

Pikmin 2 is not awful, but the lack of urgency in that game makes it not stand out. Pikmin 3 is great, i think i'm biased because i was a huge fan of Pikmin 1 and 2 and it took so long for them to release 3 that i was all in, but some Pikmins are too OP.

Pikmin 4 is the absolute goat, it's insane how Nintendo can take these games that appear to have such a limited way to be execute and, somehow, surprise us with open-worlds that feel alive and fun to explore.

Wrong and retarded. This hack also adds a second campaign where you play as Louie (with new enemies, an unused obstacle from the data files, a custom final boss, and animated cutscenes), 4 player co-op, and a randomizer mode.

At the end of the day the gameplay for these games consists of targetting something then pressing a button 50 times... then doing it over and over. I loved Pikmin 1 due to the urgency and serious tone, but I'm not turning my hands into sludge to collect bottle lids like a good goyim in 2 onwards

Pikmin 3 and 4 have a lock-on system and you can hold the button to throw Pikmins non-stop at something, i don't know if they've implemented this system on Pikmin 1 + 2 for Switch, but i'll say that it was much worse with the Wii, lmao. Wii forced you to use the pointer, which was good, but when you wanted to throw a bunch of Pikmins at one spot your cursor would go all over the screen from you shaking the thing while trying to point to the IR bar.

I played through both Pikmin 1 & 2 last summer and don't recall there being much of a difference between the two in terms of polish/clunkyness. I'm sure the hack brings in a couple of welcome improvements here and there but honestly the original game has held up just fine.

Based as hell, anon. Pikmin 1 is pure distilled GameCube soul — tight design, real consequences, and those end-of-day reflections with that beautiful melancholic piano hitting just right. The pressure from the 30-day limit is what gives it such a unique flavor, and that “all-or-nothing” vibe really makes every move count. I totally get the dopamine hit of trying to shave off days on replays, too — it's basically a time-optimization puzzle game disguised as an RTS.

Pikmin 2 is good in its own way, with more freedom and beefier content, but it’s missing the urgency and atmosphere. Feels more like a collectathon dungeon crawler with some Pikmin flavor. I always say Pikmin 1 is survival and Pikmin 2 is exploration.

Also yeah, Pikmin 4 went harder than it had any right to. Dandori challenges are peak “one more try” crack, and Oatchi might be the most OP sidekick in Nintendo history.

The only real improvement 2 made over 1 is the Pikmin AI. The Pikmin in 2 don't trip over constantly like retards like they do in 1, they respond faster to your whistle, and they don't waste time trying to grab objects that have the maximum number of Pikmin on them already. Both pale in comparison to Pikmin 3's AI, but that's just how it goes.
Pikmin 1 is fine enough on its own, and I honestly prefer it over the Pikmin Squared version (mainly for personal reasons). I like Pikmin 1's UI better, and though I can't really explain it but Pikmin 1 does something with its engine/graphics that Pikmin 2 lacks even in the Squared remake and I can't really explain it but I really like it.

So yeah, whether you play Pikmin 1 or Pikmin Squared is up to you, as they're both perfectly serviceable. If it makes any difference, Pikmin 1's only post-game content is time trials, while Pikmin Squared makes a completely new fanfic campaign starring Louie which is basically Pikmin 1 Hard Mode, and it's really fun. Even comes with custom journal entries.

the game is short enough that you should play through vanilla 1 to see how it is, then go through Squared to get an appreciation for the improvements and play the Louie campaign, it's really good.

How are the Switch versions of 1&2? I've beaten the gamecube originals before but I'm getting the itch the replay them.
