>>713198271 (OP)The biggest problem with modern RTS is actually nothing to do with the genre, but with how the culture of video gaming has changed at large. Today players (especially young players) will look up guides and watch professional content creators for every game they play. The social media space has created a stressful social consciousness where the zoomer feels embarrassed if he is not playing "optimally" because "everybody should know this".
But unlike most games, playing an RTS optimally is outrageously difficult, far beyond how a normal human being would approach the game if they were just playing a little for fun. This was equally true in the past, but no one cared, because there was no pervasive fear of being suboptimal. Most people in multiplayer just played the game.
It is still possible to play this way in modern RTS, but it is not possible for the zoomer to participate in social media discussion surrounding the games' multiplayer aspects without experiencing the tension of "playing wrong."
