Gunplay is worse. Encounter design is far worse, with a lot of areas being enemies just pouring in from the sides and maybe one or two buildings with windows, or tight corridors with guys that spawn in front or somethings behind you. In 4, the area the game takes place in makes sense and you can follow a logical progression through it, whereas in 5 you just get arbitrarily pulled into the next area that all basically exist in a vacuum. Inventory is infinitely worse and they got rid of treasure combinations. Upgrading and switching between guns isn't as fun. It's got a bunch of shitty action gimmick sections with turrets, and no cool horror atmosphere like 4 outside of arguably the first boss. There's not a single thing 5 does better. I think my biggest gripe with RE5 is that the environments are boring as hell to traverse and like that other anon said, they feel disjointed from each other
One moment you're in a village, the next moment you're on a platform of some chemical plant, and then you're in a remote tribal village
It's all neat stuff but it doesn't feel very cohesive
It feels like you're moving from one shooting gallery to the next without any real progression to the plot, not that it's really important anyway which is a whole other thing
That being said, it is fun with a friend

It's a good co-op action title. I have no idea why they called it Resident Evil though, it absolutely jumps the shark on the franchise's design conventions. Little in the way of atmosphere, exploration or puzzle designs, like 90% of it is a Rambo simulator. There's also no system to combine items into inventory while it's open like 4 has. Sure, survival horror as a genre is just a subcategory of action adventure, one that historically emphasizes the "adventure" with the "action" part playing more of a supplementary role. Always has been this, you can say the same for Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Clock Tower, etc. I struggle to call 5 and 6 action adventures. Honestly, even 4's cutting it close, the "adventure" element in all of these games is set back pretty far. Not nonexistent, but close enough to where it can be difficult to recognize. I've beaten the campaign solo on every difficulty. The AI's stupidity is very overclaimed. There's only one pinch point that the AI will end your run on, and that's on the last chapter 2 level where you man the gun turret on that humvee. You can't take down the boss at the end fast enough solo on the hardest difficulty, and the AI doesn't do a good enough job of getting the other enemies off your back.
Just give Sheva the bow and arrow or a sniper rifle if you don't have the bow yet, and she'll do just fine for the rest of the campaign.

They are nothing alike. The original trilogy is built upon the idea that the player will replay the game multiple times. 7 is fucking terrible for replays because of all the slow, railroaded scripted sequences since Nakanishi is more concerned about cinematic scares than making a video game.

Besides, the story sucks compared to every single previous RE game. I have nothing against Sheva but it should've been Jill and Chris vs Wesker instead. Also "Las Plagas" don't fit in Africa as the main enemy. A progenitor-based virus would have been more fitting. The beta had the right idea with the Crimson Heads.

You are literally forced to play with an infinite gaitling gun during the savana stages and the El Gigante boss fights. You can't change weapons. You can't even freely move. The game becomes a fucking rail-shooter in those parts. Besides the Irving boss fight and the final Ourboros boss fight also have those gaitling guns available near you. It doesn't make sense not to use them but that takes away any challenge from them. Which doesn't really matter because the game gives you plenty of guns and ammo to deal with them.

Playing RE5 is like a "overprotected kid" simulator. It gives you so much power that it seems like you are trapped in that FUN academy from Fairly OddParents.
