destroying shit doesn't really increase or decrease the number of vertices.
Billy hatcher had a system like this for the snow all the way back on the gamecube.
so it's not exactly a demanding system and there's no reason the environments or the mesh holes needed to be so low fidelity.
and there's definitely no reason the textures needed to be so flat and low resolution. It's just a lack of care.
