Why aren't modern games capable of capturing the soul of going on a great adventure?

It can't be just shit living conditions and economy because Japan was in a great recession in the 90s and 00s and they put out pure kino in vidya form for 15 years straight anyway

on a sidenote I miss when you could immediately discern things like pickups/switches in a game
modern games have to be packed with all this unreal engine slop like decorations and foliage, forcing me to ram my body into every little thing to confirm if it's interactable

TR3, is my favourite TR game and adventure game period, and that is DEFINITELY not TR3.

I guess it could...be TR4? But i dont recognize that chained wooden platform from anything at all in the game.

Modern games got the looks but forgot the feels. Adventure isnโ€™t just running around; itโ€™s actually giving a damn about where youโ€™re going. Maybe they need less graphics, more soulโ€”or just a better quest writer whoโ€™s not asleep at the wheel.

render distance killed it. both bottom pics you dont know what's in the distance. could be something, could be nothing. same games made today would have generic mountains with blue atmospheric tinting. who gives a fuck about that. mystery is better than retard mountain

Kings Field sucks ass and never feels like an adventure.
The first game is at least a good tech demo. The rest is cheap slop.

i really wanted to like kingdom come but the combat system was just so dire, if not for the combat being so poorly balanced (either you exploit it and it's a joke or you don't and it's miserable cbt) it'd probably be considered one of the great games od recent memory, i heard kc2 didn't even fix the masterstroke shit, tragic
and really, without the rpg mechanics if it was just an action game with no random roll, the combat might work, but it just doesn't mesh with levelups at all

Part of it is definitely not having render limitations. The way games had to unfold the world for you through tight spaces and fog added to the sense of discovery. Every game now is a graphics show piece even when that goes against the very design nature of the game.

People do not like to hear it but I honestly think it is because old graphics gave these games this "soul" you are asking about. The graphical limitations make the scale of everything feel far more grand. Also these older games tend to use a lot of fog to mask poor draw distances. Look at what happened with the GTA remasters. Getting rid of all the fog from GTA San Andreas showed how small the game world truly is when back then it felt quite big to those of us who grew up with it. When everything is super detailed much of the mystery also goes away. From however are good at giving this sense of exploration to their games due to their approach with the Souls style games. It takes far more skill now to give a game this sense of soul or adventure you are asking about. Things like quest markers, marked mini maps, etc, this all detracts from stuff like that.

the difference is that a mobile game would control the drift for you and then pressure you to make MTX purchases to go faster

Nah that is one of those tranny apologist games. It looks cool and the music is trippy but I cannot support that kind of nonsense. These days I have a mostly Japan or asian games only policy with so much games I am interested in unless I am familiar with a particular western game well enough to know I am going to have my brain spared the bullshit.

Convenience is the adventure killer.

If to get your McDonald you need to travel through the nigger hood, run across the highway, talk with the cashier, and then run back home with your loot before it get cold, that's an adventure.
If you just UberEat it, it's won't feel much like an adventure despite the loot being the same.

Old games being really fucking rough when it came to QoL, level design, etc actually made the adventure feel more real.
The real problem is that there is no clean cut off were something stop being good design and start making your game feel like a park.

What it take to create this feeling again? I'm thinking a very carefully and thoughtfully crafted game world to maximise very distinct experiences of exploration.
BUT also with some randomised elements so that no two players have the same exact experience. It was so comfy how 90s games came with guide books that gave you some basic information, and if you were really lost you could buy guides that show you where everything is. Since print media is pretty much dead and games are loathe to put out physical releases with art/guide books, I think it would be better to do this randomised thing. Because if items and shit are all in the exact same place in everyone's copy of the game then people can just look shit up within 15 minutes of the game launch and some sperg has detailed everything on a website which takes a lot of the awe and wonder out of a game.
